Minor update... I placed the order for the proof yesterday... and got a noticed that it shipped today! With Lulu you are usually talk 3-5 days from order placed, to shipped. So this is much nicer in that respect at least.

UPDATE
Proof has arrived and it looks exactly like it did in the digital proof tool. Quality of print is comparable to Lulu, it looks very professional... only problem is... I FORGOT THE PAGE NUMBERS. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sooooo uploading a new file and trying again! ![]() I am happy with what I have gotten, and will be moving my books off Lulu one at a time over the next few weeks. Sucks that they do not do hard cover, but the fact that I can cut my prices so that my 350 page book is $8 instead of $15 is huge. Price does go up CONSIDERABLY if you want to use "extended distribution" because the retail channels take 60% of the LIST price. So you have ... LIST PRICE - 60% - Print Costs = your cut. Raise my book to $10 a copy (still cheaper then Lulu). So I probably just wont bother with that channel. I can sell via Amazon with out that "extended" channel and thats good enough for the small demand I have for print books. |

Apparently I can't use the Extended Distrib anyway since I refuse to use their CreateSpace ISBN. Just as well -- I would have had to price to over $10 just to NOT BE CHARGED PER COPY.
![]() After much deliberation last night, I set the price to $7.99, which gets me 78 cents per sale. That's a lot less than the 1.98 per sale on a Kindle version of my book, but I don't want to put my print readers in a choke-hold. The print-and-royalty cost chunk is surprisingly high, though. Well, to my mind. |

Amazon Create Space - List at 7.99, 87 cents profit to me. Lulu - List at #14.99, 74 cents profit to me. So Amazon may seem expensive to you... but to me they are freaking cheap. ![]() I would have to to go 9.99 to sell with extended distro, which I wont bother, but thats still way better then Lulu. |

I am sorta considering making a new copy of my book for just extended distribution. It would be identical in all ways, except the price. That would allow me to charge 7.99 on Amazon, and $10 or whatever in retail stores.

I've had a decent experience with Lulu over the years. The process is simple enough. The quality of the finished book is decent enough. Not great. I ran a few titles through CreateSpace as well and found it no better and no worse in any respect, except, perhaps, the website is quicker.

I have put all three books on it and am waiting on my proof copies now. gonna be a bit said to leave Lulu, but they are slower, their digital proofing tools are not anywhere as nice, and they are twice the price for the same quality. Hard to stand by that. |
