I think it's still part of which device should I get because it allows people to voice opinions as to why they like one over the other. It's interesting to read the different opinions. Is it because X brand was your first? Don't know. Could be. I was like that with cars, always a VW girl. |

Yep, with my original post I was intending on getting opinions on some readers and to see whether there are others out there who prefer one to the other.

I love my Sony prs 505. It's the first and only reader I've had. I've played with others in shops but never been tempted to purchase a new one.
Unfortunately, the battery is nearly dead, I do have a new battery for it but I've been waiting for the courage to let a friend of mine change it. At the mo, I keep it plugged in while in use and take paperbacks to the doctor's etc. From what I've seen of the T1, I'm not impressed enough to buy it. Don't think I'll buy another unless the 505 completely bricks. Would leave a respectful period of grief though. ![]() |

I've read quite a few people saying they don't want to upgrade from their current Sony reader to the T1, what is it that you like so much about the 505, 650 etc that isn't there or as good in the T1?

Have you ever held the previous versions? They were works of art, perfect in design and execution, with a beautiful aluminium case. Compared to them the T1 is just a plastic "me too" reader that was designed with the objective to lower production costs. Just compare the elegant integration of the pen in the PRS-350/650 with the lack of any integration with the T1.
I also dislike how they have reduced the number of available formats (no more BBeB/lrf and RTF). I hope Sony will offer a premium version of the T1 or of the next reader version. Compared with the huge choice you have with other electronic consumer products the level of choice you have with readers is very limited anyway. |

Thanks CommonReader. I haven't ever held one of the older Sony's, and that's possibly why I wondered what the big attraction to them is! I can certainly understand the better quality feeling they might have, the case of the T1 does seem it's biggest downfall. Better performance and superior screen are only part of it I guess, how it feels in your hand and how you 'feel' the interaction is pretty important.

In certain ways, e-readers with e-ink have been a bit like netbooks so far: intentionally limited in power and purpose, and all with the same basic specs. And as with netbooks, our preferences are about aesthetics and ergonomics.
Netbooks have reached the end of their circumscribed life-cycle and have been overtaken by ultrabooks. The difference with e-ink is that the screen is different from that of normal tablets and perhaps more comfortable to read -- which is why so many of us view its inevitable denouement with apprehension. Personally, I want my ereader to be dedicated to reading books, not to surf the web, or take notes, or be a mini ipad.
For this the most important factors are: what the text looks like (eink) ; the ease of navigation - love the buttons on the 505 and the way the pages turn, makes it feel more like a 'book'. I don't feel the need for a touch screen, though others have a different view. I also want it to handle a wide range of formats and to be side-loadable. The 505's SD slot is important to me, cos I tend to load a whole library of books onto it, not just what I'm reading at the moment. This saves hard drive space (a habit I got into with my old pc which had only 40gb HD, my new one has 320gb but I still try to keep the loading down) and I can move the archive onto an external HD. I don't like the shiny casing on the T1. The T1 does more than I need. I only want to read books. A friend of mine was looking at the Kindle (touch? not sure, it was the one which in the US came with advertising) and liked the look of the text but disliked the silly square navigation button. I tried to explain Kindle's "cloud" system of storing books, but I'm not sure he believed I knew what I was talking about. As far as he was concerned, if you bought a book, it was on your reader. (He's never owned an ereader so is used to paying for a paperback and it's in his grubby hands!) Also, readers don't have the nice cases as standard anymore. Although I keep my 505 in book armor, I long appreciated the faux leather cover before deciding it needed stronger protection from cat paws (imagine nice cat emoticon). So unless the 505 completely dies and there's a good eink replacement, I won't be considering another ereader. |

I presume the price of your old Sony's was a heck of a lot more than the price of a new T1? So would you be willing to spend considerably more for a premium replacement?

I paid € 229,- for my PRS-650 last year. Money well spent. I simply do not understand why for a product that mostly targets a financially more affluent group the defining development target seems to be cost cutting. There should be a viable market for readers with a high quality feel.

You can do this from your computer One of the reasons I chose the Kobo Touch over the Kindle was to access the local library's eBooks but when I did so found nothing of interest to me I'm a sci-fi fan and all they had listed under sci-fi was fantasy which 'aint my cup of tea' ![]() Not that I regret getting the Kobo, I find it does the job well ![]() |

I don't think it is inevitable at all - e-ink occupies a niche in the market that can't be filled by tablet computers, smartphones or any other TFT/LCD/backlit screen, because it has the unique property of not needing a backlight and therefore allowing much longer periods of reading. I don't see why it should be killed off by other devices - I can see them existing quite happily side by side, like TV and radio. Last edited by LuvReadin; 04-02-2012 at 07:15 AM. |
