This wording (might be just a difference in usage) has me confused.
There is metadata.db (file) : That is where all you see in the Calibre UI is kept, sorted, tagged... (in the picture the 'Library' is named: My eBooks

along with that, there are Author folders
That contain Titles(###)
The ### is the internal linkage to the metadata,

which is one reason (of many) not to be messing around at these locations.
