I remember that when the tablet market share was discussed some months ago, people were saying that Samsung's market share is overestimated because they were counting devices shipped, not sold, while Apple sells most devices directly and not through retailers so what they ship is what they sell. Has this changed?

I think we saw something similar with the iPhone 4S. The websites were on back-order but there were actually stock in retail stores lasting past the weekend of release. I guess there are less people willing to wait in line when they could just sit comfortably at home and have the device shipped to them.

I reckon the availability of the iPad 2 at a lower price point has also hurt 3rd gen iPad sales.

This, pretty much, sums up my thoughts on it. I know a couple people who couldn't have cared any less about the new iPad and snapped up the iPad2 once the price dropped. Their response when I asked why they didn't get the 3rd one? "It's not that big of an upgrade from 2 to 3, maybe when the 4th comes out, I'll get that one." - Something to that tune, anyways.

I like the idea...but I carry too much in my purse as it is, lol. Add in a heavier iPad, additional memory and hubby's wallet?? I would need a backpack...or a porter.

It depends on what looks best. If at the end of the quarter they only show generic iPad sales and profits then it doesn't matter where the money comes from.

You either have bad management sending devices to places where they don't sell while not having enough for the places where they do sell, or good management that figured out the fact that they win more from the statement that they sold out the devices available online so they limited the numbers.

When the other models came out Apple released the sales numbers. The new management decided not to do that.

Apple frequently uses the "underpromise and overdeliver" method when setting dates on their site. Just because it says 2 weeks doesn't mean it'll take 2 weeks.

I read somewhere that they undersold what they projected.

I imagine it's sold out in some and not in others. Kinda like black Friday. Doesn't say anything about the product itself though

I think the iPad 2's screen is already extraordinarily nice (for a backlit screen). I believe that Apple can make one even nicer; that kind of thing is what they do. I think you'd have to be really hard core about your screen quality to be unhappy with the iPad 2, though. And spending 500$ on a new one is the sort of thing I would only do if I wasn't happy with the old one anymore.

What iPod Touch do you have? The 4th generation? If so, when it comes to text clarity, the iPad 2 is noticeably worse compared to the iPod Touch 4th gen. For me, it's always jarring moving from the laser-like clear text on the iPhone 4 to the dot-matrix like display on the iPad 2.

One nice thing about Apple products is they have fairly decent resale value so if you decide to resell your old iPad, you're only out $200~300.

Hmm, wonder how a lease model would work for the iPad. It's yours for a year and at the end of the lease agreement, you can pay extra if you want to keep it or return it if you don't want to keep the lease. HP, Dell, etc already offer leases for computers.

I agree. My iPhone 4 screen is so much nicer than my iPad 1 screen. I intend to upgrade in a couple of months.
