I threw the free bag out within a week. Cheap tacky and altogether something I did not wish to use. Instead I went to an stationeer and purchased a lovely A5 portfolio designed to hold a note pad, pen and business cards. This has worked well.

Illiad in Dymocks Melbourne?

Hi

I wanted to have a look at the Illiad before forking out the $899. Does anyone know if any Dymocks stores in Melbourne stock it?
Of course, there's no info on their web site.

Cheers,

m-reader

And the answer is no. Just called the Collins street store, and they've been trying to get some stock, but it seems Sydney George Street store is the only one selling them in-store at the moment.
They are hoping to get some in though, as there seems to be a fair deal of interest ...
Funny thing is they had no idea that Dymocks is the only place in Australia stocking Iliad at the moment ...

Gees, talk about whiney? Rather than offer your useless sarcasm, how about you talk about your actual, recent experiences with Dymocks. Yeah, I thought not. Still buying stuff there, I bet.

You're just a bloody drama queen. Let it go, fergodsake! Go cuddle up with your Hello Kitty merchandise collection or something.

Err, I don't know - perhaps for once in your life you decided that your selfish worldview could actually accept within it some personal responsiblity? Nah, not little, old, whiny you; the eternal victim of circumstance.

I think I'll buy a Cybook...you know, to console myself.
Sheesh. Never have I met such a whinging, pathetic, loser. Live with what's provided, make your decision, and stop second-guessing hindsight. JUST BUY THE BLOODY THING, YOU SAD SACK OF DINGO DOO-DOO!

That's what I've done...logged on just today and bought myself an Iliad from those wonderful folk at Dymocks. I'm sure I'll be most happy with it and them.

Cheers,
Marc (or, at least, one of the many voices in his head)

Marc, I bought a Sony Reader through B&H -- much cheaper than getting a Cybook from their site.

The Sony was $388AUD with the cheapest shipping (arrived at my place in Canberra in 3 days) and currency conversion fee on my visa card.

It's a great little machine!

I was tempted...but one requirement that the Sony couldn't satisfy was the Dictionary Lookup feature. The Cybook had this, straight up.

In the end though, I thought, "Blow this. You only live once. You've got the money. Just buy it", and I bought the Iliad from cursed Dymocks. I expect it Monday or Tuesday (so they'll probably deliver it by next Friday ).

It's nice buying toys.

Cheers,
Marc (or another voice, "for I am legion' )

I haven't owned an ebook reader device before, but while reading a "real" book I used dead-tree dictionary lookup constantly (including translation, usually French-to-English). Most recently I've used my iPaq for this, though I never read books on it. I can be a very "picky" reader with a book that I feel strongly enough about that certainty on the meaning of a word is a must. For example, Primo Levi's 'If This Is A Man' and 'The Truce' took me a long time to read, looking up words, including the occasional French, as sometimes words don't precisely mean what I might think they mean or may have deduced via context, or can mean more than I expect (that, and these books are worth slow contemplation, as distressing as they may be). Also, I think it was HarryT who mentioned requiring a specialist dictionary while reading some older literature he is fond of, as the older dictionary contained definitions of words that had fallen into disuse and didn't appear in current dictionaries.

Thus, dictionary lookup was an absolute requirement for me. Text search would have been next, but that feature seems to be lacking in eInk readers in all but the Kindle (which was not an option).

For that reason, the Sony was really dead-in-the-water for me. Only price kept it there for a time as an option.

Cheers,
Marc
