I agree Frank Muller is good. He's probably the only reason I ever got all the way through Moby Dick. Susan Ericksen, who does the JD Robb "In Death" books is amazingly good, even allowing for her somewhat curious choice of making Detective Peabody sound like the androgynous "Pat" from Saturday Night Live. So is Lou Diamond Philips, who did a really good job on the last Tom Clancy book I listened to. I like Lou as an actor, but still was somewhat surprised at how good a job he did. ApK |

Frank Muller does an excellent job with Moby Dick also.

You would love Peter Ganim's narration of Forty Signs of Rain by Kim Stanley Robinson. I listened to 3 hours of it driving home after Thanksgiving. I stuck with it that long because the book was interesting, but the narration had few changes of pace or inflection. I finally quit before I put a bullet in my head.

It wasn't dramatic, it sounded like he was running out of air and rushing the last sentence he was reading, before pausing the recording. When he started up his tone and pace were normal again. It broke up the narrative and I found it distracting.

I don't listen to many audio books (it has been more than 15 years since I have done that regularly and then it was always with my parent's on long trips), but I did hear John Cleese narrate The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis a few years ago and loved it.

James Masters reading Jim Butcher's Dresden files. You fell he is the character telling you his story.

Rob Inglis reading the LOTR trilogy is sublime.
Jim Dale's rendering of the Harry Potter series is also exceptional. I don't mind Spike reading The Dresden Files but they are not my favorite. ![]() |

Beresford Bennett's narration made Colson Whitehead's Zone One a very enjoyable experience for me. He struck just the right pace for that particular book (on the faster side) and I can't think of anyone who would do a better job.

I really liked the work of Nathan Lowell in Trader Tales. Best of all they are free:

And, by the way, what's the easiest way to download the whole book from that site? Last edited by ApK; 03-17-2012 at 04:09 PM. |
