I think that Jordan's problem was that he was married to the editor. Frankly, the main line series could have been done is four to five books. A lot of side stories could have been moved into follow up books and a quite of a bit of the verbiage could have been edited down quite a bit.

For those who havent listened to them, the audiobooks for WoT are one of the best made ever. The narrators are superb (1 man and 1 woman, depending on the point of view). They make all the characters come alive. I was able to listen to the slower books relatively easy. I highly recommend you all give it a try.
