It could also be that a sony ereader at $99 is more in line with the nook and kindle's $99 ereaders

FWIW, it's sold out at a lot of Best Buys. A salesman said that they aren't getting anymore shipments.

The T1???

All that Kindle/Nook publicity....I'd better plan a trip to the local Best Buy. Maybe tomorrow.

To me, the T1 was not a great marketing move. I know a lot of people don't like to hear any criticism of the T1, but, in many ways, it was a step down from the previous generation. I, for one, love the 950 for its bigger screen, for 3g and content auto-delivery.

The T1 was a cheaper version, made to compete with the lower prices of Amazon. But, truth is, you can't compete.. if you offer hardware that is comparable to a Kindle, you get hammered on not having the Amazon ecosystem, which works so much better... What I am trying to say is that SONY had a hardware advantage (until the x50 series) and they decided to give that up to compete on price.

On top of that, the T1 was plagued by problems for quite a while after release. I am not surprised the result is a desperate, sclerotic pricing roller coaster.

We have given SONY for dead in the ereader market more than once, so I know better than to read too much into this. But I believe that hardware providers have no future in this business - it's all about making a buck on book sales to subsidize a cheap device (which has been the Amazon model all along). And SONY just can't compete at that game, not with its mediocre and US-only SONY store, not with the garbage of software that it is offering.

SONY's only hope is to go back to producing superior hardware for a market niche.

I've never had a Sony before. I want the T1 because of the android base, and the incredible ease of rooting to make it an e-ink android reader capable of reading many formats with Coolreader, and with the card slot capable of holding thousands of books without a glitch, unlike my Kindles that can only hold a few hundred. I like the home screen on the T1 better than the Kindle, too. And the landscape view, which Kindle touch doesn't have. I love my Kindles but the T1 seems to have many advantages over it!

If you really want it, then I'd take a trip soon. I'd also check inventory online before you go. It's unavailable at most of the stores in my area.

I did call BB this morning and they have it in stock. $129. She had no knowledge of any clearance sale last week. They have black. Target has white. I am leaning towards the white. I read that Target has a 45 day return policy for ereaders, but no idea if they penalize for it being opened.

I was considering the Nook Touch b/c it's cheaper, but I think the Sony is a better product. Am I wrong? Anyway it appears to be faster and easier to root.

I have the Nook Touch & the Sony T1. I really do prefer the Sony. Not that the Nook Touch is a bad reader, it is a good basic reader, but it is just a bit too wide for my hands so is not comfortable for me to read with one handed.

I'm not into rooting so I can't speak about that.

I went to Best Buy this morning and picked up a Sony PRS T1 for $99. They showed it as being on clearance.

Have you looked into Nook for rooting? Wondering how is T1 better than Nook for rooting.

The Best Buy clearance is puzzling since other places like bhphotovideo.com is still selling it at full price.

Yes I have looked at the rooting procedures for both, and watched videos, and the Sony is so super easy. The Nook is a much more complicated process, involving putting files on an SD card, going to youtube, gmail, things like that. With the Sony you pretty much just download a file, plug in the Sony, and click on the file.

ilovegadgets, I'd like to know what state you are in, and was the price marked on the shelf, or did it just ring up at that price?

I'm in Georgia. It had a "clearance" sticker on the display and there were at least three Sonys. When I checked online, the price showed as $129 and "only available in store" so I was expecting to get to the store and see it not online here.

What about in terms of capabilities? I heard that Nook has more Android apps working for it than the T1. Are there any features missing with the Sony T1?
