ETA: I've been informed that since the files may be corrupt, I've lost all my annotations, anyway. Darn. Last edited by beautifulsoup; 03-05-2012 at 12:50 PM. Reason: For the ETA, silly. |

Well, in spite of the fact that I clearly explained to the Kobo help team that the free book problem seemed to be originating from the site rather than from my reader, the Kobo site still persist in blaming the readers and the Desktop software.
My original complaint to the Kobo Support team was... this morning, while doing a sync on my Kobo Touch e-reader, your site began to download a series of free books I had already downloaded. On attempting to open these books on my e-reader, it now comes up with error messages ("oops! This document couldn't be opened... Try updating your library. If you still can't open it, please contact Kobo Customer Care...)". They already sent me one reply which I posted yesterday. When I suggested this reply did not help, they sent another one, which I've copied for you below. Hi Paul, I do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Please do the following steps for a factory reset of the Kobo touch. Also please uninstall the Kobo desktop program and re download and re install the Kobo desktop. If the problem still presist please let me know and I will be happy to further assist you. To perform the factory reset: 1.If possible, back up any books or documents that you added to your eReader using Adobe Digital Editions, or that you manually added using your computer. You do not need to back up any books you bought from the Kobo Store. 2.On your eReader's Home page, tap Home. 3.Select Settings. 4.Tap Device Information. 5.Tap Factory Reset. 6.Tap Reset Now. To use your eReader after a factory reset you must: 1.Set it up again using the free Kobo Desktop software. 2.Sync your library to restore any Kobo books you own. 3.Reconfigure any settings you had changed. 4.Add any books or documents you previously added using Adobe Digital Editions, a Micro SD card, drag-and-drop on your computer, or other means. I do love my Kobo Touch and largely even love the Kobo site (infinitely better than Amazon). However, I do think they need to add more capable staff to their IT support team! |

Tried to fix another book for mum, deleted it on the device, re-downloaded.... not there, tried again... not there.
Got it to download and appear, finally, but using the desktop application. |

If you log off, and then back on....your desktop will re-sync everything, purchased and free. They (free book downloads) then will open as usual. I sure hope this isn't a chronic 'free book' re-sync happening.

The previously downloaded "P.G. Wodehouse: Death at the Excelsior" also became unreadable, I deleted it, and tried to re-download, but it disappeared from the free books list...

I just tried to open one of my free books (Secret Garden by Burnett), the title turned black as it usually does and there it stuck, my Kobo froze up and I had to soft re-set it. It works as long as I open books that are not public domain, so far anyway.
I am on dial up and definitely do not want to do a factory reset so hopefully someone will come up with a less invasive fix. |

I've deleted all the free books from my desktop, and then reloaded.
I haven't synched my reader with desktop for weeks. But now that I had to delete all the freebies from Desktop, I'm thinking that the books will then be deleted from my reader(s). Yes, two; don't judge me. :P So - the "uncorrupted" free ebooks still reside on my reader(s), since I haven't synched to Desktop since this freebie debacle The ones on my readers still have annotations. If I were to (egad, this will be time-consuming) go to the desktop and re-annotate the new desktop copies to match what I have on my readers, I'm thinking that logically it should follow that I could then delete the free books from my reader, and then re-synch so that the annotations will stay on the ereader. But if I were to synch now, I'm thinking my annotations would not synch to the new "freebie" books, because they are, in essence, now "new" freebie books. Does any of what I'm saying make sense? Certainly, the method suggested by the Kobo support email I posted earlier (where they advised simply to log out of Kobo desktop and rebuild) doesn't work. And as for the factory reset, there is no way I'd consider this, because I'd then also lose all the annotations I've made to each of my purchased books and all of my Calibre-added books. I regard this solution from the Kobo support email a real cop-out! The only way to fix the problem is by manually deleting each free book (being careful not to delete any actually purchased ones) and then adding each one again from the Kobo site, and then resynching. It's time consuming AND the annotations disappear, unfortunately. A good way to do the deletions is to go to the "My Library" link on the Kobo site, and ticking any free books that have the blue "Download Epub" icon on the right of the book. Don't delete any books that have the blue "Adobe DRM EPub" icon next to them because these are probably either purchased files or else free files that haven't been corrupted. Hope this helps. Good luck! |

Which makes no sense to me. I'm through with Kobo freebie epubs. ![]() From now on I'll be going to Gutenberg, or any of the other wonderful sites out there for my classics, and sideloading. Last edited by beautifulsoup; 03-10-2012 at 08:25 AM. Reason: to clarify. i think. |

It's so strange that logging out and back in again does not work for everyone, either...
Kobo should try harder to resolve the problem, really... |

Shoot, the same update/sync caused my Kobo Touch to corrupt every free ebook I had in the device. Used Calibre to delete the corrupt ebooks but it seems like it also deleted from Kobo library as well and couldn't find them in my account. So I've lost all the ebooks I had and can't really remember what titles I had. A major headache, should not have updated if I knew the consequence. Not impressed with Kobo servers...
