A little more info...

However Kristi Chadwick, access services supervisor of C/W MARS Inc., told LJ that according to Content Reserve, the date for both ebooks and audiobooks is April 30. Said Chadwick, “We have also received word both there and from the OverDrive announcements that the titles will have a five year lending limit.”

And since OD already turned over and presented Amazon it's belly...I am doubtful it will go over well.

If this is true, I guess we won't be seeing the ebooks for sale for another few months.

Not sure, but the Digital Shift article does say they'll be available for Kindle Lending in the US. As to if they're correct I guess we'll know April 30th.

Well, whenever the ebooks come out...I think it's great Rowling and/or biz manager are working with Overdrive and they deserve kudos. This is great news for library users. I've watched all the movies but never read the books. I've come around to being interested in reading them but preferably in eformat as I don't want to borrow the huge hardcover versions and paperback fonts are too difficult for me.

So why wasn't this announced on the "official" blog that's too busy posting stupid fanarts to actually keep its would-be readers informed?

Don't know and don't care. Obviously since I haven't read any of the books, I'm not Potter fan and don't follow any of the news. I just want to read the ebooks for free (legally) when they're released. If they never do come out, I'll be disappointed but oh well I guess I'll borrow the pbooks.

Btw, the Arlington, VA county library system has them for holding too. I was able to get myself 1st or 2nd on the books. I'm sure the hold list will grow rapidly over the next few days.

I'd be curious to know what they're charging libraries (libraries generally pay more for eBooks than the public does).

I checked the 5 e-libraries I have access to and 1 of them is carrying both the epub and audiobook versions as pre-release order.

And the audiobook download is available in MP3 format, which shocks the heck out of me!

They've only bought 3-4 copies of each type, so the wait-lists will be horrid. But they ARE there.

So... DRM only, through Sony, B&N and Amazon? And US-Kindle only?

So much for Rowling's claim they'd be readable on "any device." Right now, I don't read on any of those devices.

These are library books, I don't think she's made any claims about that. The Kindle part would be US only (again for library books) because that's the only place OverDrive and Amazon are offering library lending so far. It also says devices include, not only on those devices.

Hello John -- Thank you for your email. The eBooks and audiobooks are available now to libraries and schools for pre-order from OverDrive. We have not yet announced the go-live date.

Thanks again for your interest.

The ebooks (and audio books) are available at the two libraries I'm a member of, with a release date of April 30.
