All things being equal, I think I'd say the Cenobites from the Hellbound Heart. Then maybe Conan. |

Lots of really though guys out there, but across all genres I can't see anyone going toe to toe with a Space Marine and come out in one piece.

I'd go with Jack Reacher. His size and slightly amoral attitude means his conscience won't be troubled by dealing out a bit of rough justice. Parker is hard, but doesn't care about anyone else, so just doesn't get involved unless someone is standing in his way. I'd also support the Spenser & Hawk team nomination. I would also mention Joe Pike (Elvis Cole's sidekick on the Robert Crais series). With his forward facing red arrow tattoos on each arm, and the perennial sunglasses, he is a very tough nut. |

Sticking to crime fiction: Andrew Vachss's Wesley. But in general: Conan. |

I second (or third...) Joe Pike and Hawk. I also like Win in the Myron Bolitar series, Serge Storm, and for hard women, Shotgun Suzie in the nightside series and Marlene Ciampi in the Butch Karp series. Helen Oops forgot Jane Whitefield Last edited by speakingtohe; 02-23-2012 at 11:27 AM. |

I am going to go to Science Fiction.. and the character that has always stood out for me was Thomas Orley from David Brin's Startide Rising. **** Spoiler Warning ***** He goes on a mission he knows is likely one way... to essentially bait a trap for one of the galactic races that are trying to find the crew of his human/dolphin ship. Then, after that, decides to bring a mess more galactics down on his head to buy the ship some time to escape. All the while, he plays species against species and manages to be the last man standing after a major battle royal. -- Bill |

Mouse Alexander, Walter Mosely's Easy Rawlins novels. Spencer had a whole bunch of hard men as allies. The whole team was together in his novel "Killshot". The REAL hard men were the IRA in the 1970s and they were right bastards. |
