I am a college student. My combination is long-life battery cheap Nokia phone for calling and iPod touch 4 for Offline wikipedia, calendar, reminders, alarms, audiobooks, music and much similar things. I love it.

Google voice isnt available everywhere. iMessage is. If we want to talk cross platform, Viber and Whatsapp are better and they are available everywhere also, but they require phones. I was simply pointing out that iMessage can be used on the iPod Touch as well as the iPhone and no phone number is required. Only an apple ID. I wasn't saying its better or worse than anything else.

So I am really curious... why on earth would you ask to be talked into buying something you dont want and never will? *shakes head in puzzlement*

I am quite certain there are some folks that have andriod devices that would entertain a look into ios ecosystem. The Touch is the most affordable and while more negative reasons than positives because of owning a 4g smartphone already, perhaps some may have taken the plunge regardless. There aren't enough replies from folks who did and why.

Since the negatives outweigh the positives, convincing isn't easily done to begin with BUT not impossible!

Sure, but it's not a compelling reason to purchase an iOS device. Most gadgets are inherently a "want", not a "need". If you haven't already convinced yourself that the iPod Touch has features you strongly want to have, I don't think anyone could have persuaded you to purchase it.

Actually, music can sound all that different depending on how good your current phone is at playing music. But to be honest, Apple has lost site of the iPod. They don't care that they now use inferior parts for the audio output and that music doesn't really sound all that good. The iPhone is good for apps and such, but as a music player, it's abysmal.

I guess you are right. I have been trying it at Best Buy at least twice a week over the last month and never pulled the trigger. Like you said, a want versus a need.

Too much duplication with what I'd use the Touch for versus my smartphone except IOS and I'd have to agree that isn't a compelling enough reason, if there are really any for those having a nice smartphone.

I really like the ppi for the display on the Touch but the screen isn't large enough for me personally especially for browsing. But since I feel the display is small, jailbreaking does give access to games on one's HDTV with the connection cable (or Apple TV) so that is something I thought about as well. And I'm sure there are some good games on IOS which aren't available yet on Android. Video playback without jailbreak would be a nice to have feature as well and I'd probably use from time to time.

So you see I've done homework! Maybe on a large Apple forum I can find more folks who took the plunge who own a nice smartphone.

I have several Android smartphones (love the Samsung Nexus S and Sony Xperia Ray) and an iPhone. I've also got a couple of iPod Touches. Plenty of duplication there. Really, it's just a matter of whether you want one strongly enough to spend money on it or you don't.

As I mentioned earlier, for me, the deciding factor was battery life (or lack thereof on my smartphone). When I use my smartphone during the day, it's already drained by night time (or if not, will become drained next morning) so I'm left with nothing to use. Since I normally do most of my reading at night just before going to bed, I decided to get an iPod Touch so I have something to read on (specifically, on Stanza) while charging my phone. For me, that was a compelling enough reason to spend money on an iPod Touch.

On an Apple forum, you'll find plenty of fanboys who think any iOS device is the best thing since sliced bread.

Maybe it is just my iPod Touch, but ever since iOS 5 it has become somewhat unstable. Nearly every day one or more apps crash, and the battery seems to drain more rapidly. Full restart does nothing to fix this, I've turned off all the iCloud stuff. It's not so bad as to be more than annoying, but it is annoying.

Still running iOS 4.3.5 on mine. I have iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone but Stanza 3.2 is kinda wonky so I kept 4.3 (and Stanza 3.1) on the Touch.

Music on an iPod Touch can sound flat, tinny with a lack of depth and bass. Overall, Apple has lost it's focus on music by not putting in good parts for the audio.

I suggest going with a Cowon music player since you have other smartphones. Cowon has very nice sound, That's part of their signature.

The sound quality was a big shock to me when I went from my Zune (which I still use for extended sessions) to an iphone. The Zune sounds quite good, and there's a noticable difference in sound quality even with the same MP3s and headphones when I go to the iphone.

Hi, I recently upgraded from an 8Gb Touch to a 64Gb model.

My main reason was space for all my music...but I love reading on the Touch, especially in bed as it is a lot lighter than my Blackberry Playbook.

Stanza is the ereader I like the best - it has great customization - but I also have iBooks, Kindle and Kobo on there.

Hmm, I have often thought to do something like this, myself. But I have this desire for an ipad, too. duplication? I dont use (well i didnt use my ipad1 when i had it) for reading, still read on the phone, but have a 3GS so its not as crisp as on the retina screen. Might be worth an ipod investment just for that. I wouldnt even need a huge capacity if I am only using it for reading.

Thanks for the cause for contemplating this option

We actually do have iPad 2's (and will be selling one and replacing it with an iPad 3 if it has retina display). As I've had the iPad fall on my nose a couple of times while reading comics/manga (ouch!), I think I'll stick to a much smaller and lighter device for bedtime reading, thank you very much.

I actually still have an original iPhone 16GB. Back when I still had the 3GS, I used the iPhone 16GB as my backup reader. After I upgraded to an iPhone 4 (with retina display), I just couldn't go back to my older iPhone's pixelated display, hence, the iPod Touch purchase. And yes, even the 8GB model is plenty if you only want it for ebooks. I barely use 1GB on mine.
