Lots and lots of reasons. For my part, I download all the (not that numerous) series I watch and stream them from my PC, rather than watch them on TV in the regular way. Why? Because the downloads come stripped of commercials, which ruin the viewing experience totally for me. I also get to see them when I want without having to buy a DVR.

TPB will just move again, alter their name or whatever, and if it some how works. Someone else will spring up.

The media companies have already hire people to spam TPB with bogus tv shows, etc.

A hour long tv show in realty is only 38-43 minutes long, the rest commercials.

A 30 minute tv show in realty is only 18-23 minutes long, the rest commercials.

That horse appears to have already bolted. One more stable door not in need of closing.

And it appears that it's not going to be possible to even close the stable doors in future.

Like most arms races I doubt there's ever going to be a final solution on either side. As soon as one side comes up with a shield the other side comes up with a better arrow.

And each time it becomes more fiddly to use, and more obviously wrong. Each time a certain percentage of the userbase either decides not to bother, or decides they can no longer rationalise it.

This kind of thing always makes me think of the oatmeal comic. I now have a pavlovian urge to smile when anyone mentions pirating!

NB - links NSFW as it contains rude words!

It actually gets easier and easier. Today, if you can use a PC at all, you can download anything and everything your heart desires. That certainly wasn't the case in the beginning, when a certain amount of expertise was required.

Edit: if you were talking about the application of DRM, then I misunderstood.

I agree. But somehow they still seem wedded to their DRM.

They could do what they did with one of the DVD ripper programs, and buy the exclusive rights to that program from its creators. Then they could have all the downloads of it squashed.

And the game of piracy whack-a-mole continues.

It's apparently being created by researchers at Delft University, with the stated aim of "Our key scientific quest is facilitating unbounded information sharing". So it doesn't appear to be a standard commercial operation looking for a payday.

Everyone has their price. Do your universities rely on government research money?
