I keep hearing good things about McDevitt's "Firebird". is that a book that works as a standalone, or do I need to have read the other books in the series?

It is worth reading, and it does work as a standalone. The main characters are the same across the Alex Benedict series, but each book works on its own. An earlier volume in the series, Seeker, won the Nebula Award in 2006.

I can't speak for Firebird, but I've read one of the other books (out of order) from his Alex Benedict series and it stood quite well on it's own two feet.
