Thank you Jehane,

Your reply was very helpful!

Here are my thoughts: I am not very original when it comes to reading in Russian, I read mostly classics. Classical literature you can download for free and it comes in PDF, txt and Word formats.

(I guess, I can't stand how contemporary authors had butchered Russian language, very few of them write well. But I do read contemporaries in English.)

I don't see myself using a lot of library books. As I said before, I am a pack rat when it comes to books and have to HAVE it. But I do like a lot what Sony T1 is offering, i.e. physical buttons, files, dictionaries, etc.

Is it possible to convert these files and read everything on one device?

Thanks a lot,

Irena

Thank you Harry,
I know that Kindle has lots of books available. How I can find out about Sony?

The Sony reads ePub books. Look at the big ePub bookstores. Kobo is a good one.

Certainly - use Calibre. If the book has DRM you'll need to remove it, but that's easily done.

If I understand you correctly, it really does not matter what formats e reader support since you always can convert from one to another. Then it comes to: which one does one like the most. Correct?

Correct. Although Amazon make the book buying experience so painless that it's a big plus for the Kindle. You should also bear in mind the level of customer service that the companies offer. Amazon's is wonderful; Sony's disgraceful.

Thanks a lot!

Since you have Kindle Touch, can you tell me if it is really THAT super sensitive? People complain about their page turning experiences.
Can you organize and search your books?
Can you bookmark and go to the spot where you left off?
I guess, dictionary is minor but nice to have (considering that English is my fifth language). Is there one?

Sorry for asking so many questions, but moving from the physical books to digital ones is a huge step for me.

Thanks again,

Irena

Referring to your six points in your first post the only difference between the two formats is dictionary support. With mobipocket it is no problem, if you want to buy an epub reader you should check beforehand if it comes with Russian/English dictionaries or if you could buy them seperately. You can only use Sony dictionaries on Sony readers.

Thanks,

I don't need Russian-English dictionary. I just thought, it would be nice to have English one

1. Pretty much all current readers use the same infrared touch screen. I don't find it at all over-sensitive, no. A light tap, and the page turns. I don't think I've ever turned multiple pages, or turned a page by accident.

2. Yes, you can organise and search your books. I would note, though, that you can't search a Russian book because there's no Cyrillic keyboard.

3. The reader automatically remembers your current reading position in every book. You can also set manual bookmarks, highlight text, add notes, etc.

4. Yes, there is an English dictionary. You can buy additional dictionaries in the Kindle bookstore.

From my experience Sony doesn't have a very good book store, but that's fine because you won't have to convert books from Kobo to read on your Sony, they have the option to download Adobe DRM ePub (Which the Sony's preferred format I think), but note that most free or classic books from Kobo won't have the option to download the ePub version. But that isn't really a problem since you can get better formatted classic ePub version (Kobo versions are usually abridged unless you pay for a Penguin Classic or something like that)

You can find English Classics (Maybe Russian books too) from the Patricia Clark Memorial Library here on MobileRead, or Project Gutenberg or just Google search and you can find some really good classic books.

Most Provinces in Canada have excellent ebook libraries which work well with Sony readers.

Most retailers selling readers in Canada have good return policies. I recommend futureshop, but you should have a two week window in any store. Some companies that are online only charge a restocking fee so check first. Amazon has a good return policy as well.

Buy one and try it out. You will pleased I am sure with either.
