When I tried it, if I have Joe Bloggs as Author and Bloggs, Joe in Author Sort.

If I set Author from Author Sort, I get Bloggs, Joe in Author, and if I hit set Author Sort from Author, I get "Joe, Bloggs,"

You didn't make it clear in your original post "what" didn't deal well with commas, and making it following my post where I mentioned the feature in the Quality Check plugin made it look like there was an issue in that, which there is not as far as I know.

So it seems in fact you were responding to chaley's comment about the Edit Metadata screen? And that too works perfectly fine for me for your example given. I suspect you haven't set your author sort tweak properly for the behaviour you are trying to achieve, mine is set to "copy" and has no issues with using those functions, no sign of a trailing comma.

@pinecone: My author sort tweak is set to 'comma', and calibre also works with your examples.

Author = "Joe Blogs", use "set author sort from author", author sort = Blogs, Joe.
Author sort = "Blogs, Joe", use "set author from author sort", author= "Joe Blogs".

I do get (at least some of) your behavior if I set the tweak to "invert". If I do that, then set the author to "Blogs, Joe", then use "set author sort from author", then author sort is "Joe Blogs," (with trailing comma). This is correct behavior. Setting the tweak to "invert" tells calibre to flop the names around unconditionally, without paying any attention to commas or any other character.

No, I was playing with the option to make the Author Name from Author Sort.

I was doing something that would not normally be done. I took a book with Author Joe, Bloggs, and Author Sort of Bloggs, Joe. I used the shortcut to make the Author from Author Sort, and then Set Author Short from Author.

That gave me the extra comma. I have not tried setting the Author Sort directly from an Author that was originally Bloggs, Joe. I will try that when I get home.
