Out of the big six we are left with Random House (no restrictions) and Harper Collins (limited restrictions). This is easily demonstrated by browsing the overdrive selection and then browsing Random House's ebook selection. They are practically the same thing.

Rant mode ahead:
The reason Library lending means so much to me is *because* I want to buy and own more books! Buying an e-reader has opened my eyes that there are so many new books out there I had never heard of because I don't go out browsing much. However, I am not a throwaway spender. I cannot afford to gamble that I am buying a book whose content, for me personally, has a short enjoyment shelf-life due to trends. Everyone has different books that for them are absolute classics that they read and re-read. There are many paper books that I have on my shelf that I have read *many* times. I am not a "read once and toss it" girl. I am passionate about my books! And books that cut to my heart are books I will eventually buy! Therefore it is crucial to me that I read a book first before deciding if I like it enough to really want my own copy. The "sample chapters" simply don't cut it for me. I am the same way about borrowing DVDs from the library. I often want to sample movies in their entirety and then decide if they will become addictions in our household, enough of an addiction that I need to buy it. We don't have tv, so we narrow our video content to what we can borrow from the library and then thus buy. I find myself deeply saddened by this. I was going to *buy* a physical copy of some of the Penguin Books I had borrowed from the library recently. They have it ALL WRONG! And it is very clear not a single publisher ever has tried to borrow one of their own e-books from the library. "Instant download" my eye! Prisoner of Tehran was popular due to Canada Reads and I had to wait my turn just like everyone else! (edit to add, not that I am complaining in the slightest about "waiting". That to me is the least of anything. Waiting for holds is something I'm extremely used to and happily do). Last edited by spindlegirl; 02-10-2012 at 04:20 PM. |

I selected "I might think twice" but my emphasis is on "might".
This is like the DRM thing in the sense that I, personally, cannot make myself think along those lines. I know that there are people here that refuse to buy from a certain vendor, certain publishers, or books with DRM. That's fine because it works for them. It doesn't work for me. I spent 30 years reading without really knowing or caring which author was with which publisher. I love libraries, and I want to support them, but I simply can't force myself to keep track of who is doing evil when it comes to books. I just want to read the books I think I'll like. There are many areas of life for which I am happy to sacrifice in order to make principled choices. This ain't one of them. |

I am with DiapDealer
there are now a great many Authors that are not getting my Eyballs because of DRM or prices/policies that exclude my public Library obtaing a copy. NB: I have yet to read a public Library e-book. |

With the exception of a handful of series I religiously follow, most books are replaceable for me. If one is not available, another will be which I am as likely to be interested in. So, I don't pay attention to the publisher. If I want it and the library has it, I get it there. Otherwise, I buy it.
I *am* more likely to buy from friendly publishers, just because they tend to be indie or inexpensive ones so I can get more bang for my buck. For instance, I am on the mailing list for Delphi Classics and got from them several books for $1.99 that I enjoy. I will likely buy the entire Masters of Art series as it's released. For less than $3 how could I not? But for the most part, there will likely be 10 books or less this year from Big Pub which are must-read for me and of those, maybe three will not be available from the library. If I want them, I see no reason to deprive myself. But I will not go looking for non-library books on purpose just to spend money on something. There is plenty else to read. |

I don't pay much attention to who the publisher is, though I do try to get the ebooks from publishers who allow promo codes.
The Library should be able to have any book that they want, just like the physical library. But I am absolutely against the piracy of eBooks, if the library doesn't have the book and the eBook is too expensive (If it's over $20 there is no way I would buy it) I'll do without or find a paper version. |

For those who say that piracy is okay because we should have access to all knowledge, you don't understand that if that system worked authors would already have their works available for free. If you actually want freedom of knowledge you have to have copyright so the authors who want money can get it, and the ones who want their works available for free can also do that.

I didn't see an option for me, which would be something along the lines of "I never pay attention to who the publisher of a book is, I just buy it if it's something I really want to read and can't get from the library."
