Well I read mostly in bed and often have a snack during. So there is often a piece of crumb or a smear on my reader screen when it turns off. One reason I think that dirt may contribute to power drain. But this is one reason I prefer an ereader, much easier to clean than a paper book

After re-calibration, everything works fine. Pity that Sony doesn't provide regular means to do the same. |

I'm curious as to why the firmware update doesn't avoid overwriting files like batterystats.bin, if it can cause such problems. I'm assuming here that the cause of the problem is that the existing file is overwritten by one in the update, which is based on a full battery - in effect causing the reader to assume that the current battery level is 100%. But perhaps the firmware update just rewrites the entire partition, so individual files can't be excluded. Oh well. At least I'll know what to look out for if and when I update, thanks to those who have gone before ![]() |

They did have a warning somewhere. I can't remember if it was on the website or in the manual or in the intro of the updater software. But the warning was the reason that I charged mine first.

The instructions clearly states the battery should be fully charged before update.
It's even in red! And no, that has NOT been added recently, it was there when I did the up update! But I guess many bypass things like instructions. I know I do many times... http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...&os_group_id=5 |

I had same problem after update, so I just kept reading books after the meter said there was no charge left and read two complete books on empty until the red light came on. Now the meter is working fine.

In the user guide for the T1 it sezs (so it must be true lol) "if not planning to use the reader for a while, power off as sleep mode will still drain the battery" of course it doesn't specify what a "while" means... all I can reiterate is that when I power off overnight rather than leaving it in "sleep mode" it more than doubles the effective life of a charge

I bought the T1 9 days ago. Fully charged it then downloaded and installed the latest firmware and started reading. Due to work, life etc I've only read 1 book in the last 9 days and that was only 325 pages. Add to that about 50 pages on my new book and a little bit of going through the user manual and some general playing around and I got a grand total of less than 500 page turns before my battery was dead. I have wifi turned off and always put it in sleep mode when not in use, never turned it off completely.
WTF?? 9 day charge and less than 500 page turns? Should I drain and charge the battery a few times by using it and see how it goes or just take it back now? |

Best to take it back while you can and exchange it.
That said I finally discharged my battery and recharged it fully. I started a thread on the issue with replies strongly against this practice. By then it was too late and battery was discharged. Charged it overnight and have gone for 4-5 days (around 1500 pages) with battery still reading full. Before battery was usually empty in 4 days. Still with a 9 day old reader and typical easy to return warranty only 15 days might be good to return it, buy a new one and start from scratch. Helen |

The only way to reset the meter without rooting if it's become uncalibrated is to drain it down until the red light shows on the reader and to make it a fully accurate reading you would have to do this half a dozen times the meter should get more accurate with each charge. I'd say you are fine just wait for the battery warning light before recharging that's the reason it's included after all. Last edited by Teknikal; 02-21-2012 at 06:14 PM. |

So I tried rooting and doing the calibrating but I don't think it's working. So I was going to return it this weekend but I did not know best buy has a 14 day return/exchange vs their usual 30 (sigh).
So instead Im going to try the tricks mentioned here.. I -did- notice that even though my battery looked like it was 0-10%, I could still read and use my device. I also removed some unnecessary apps such as Contacts and Phone. Hoping that it will help.. |

PRST1UPDATEI have found out one thing lol.... the WIFI just sucks the battery dry, about an hour browsing my local library cost me a full bar on my meter... so always remember to switch it off when not using it.... the built in browser is not good you would have to be desperate to use it for anything other than casual library browsing .. the library app seems to work as advertised I was able to log on to my local library and borrow books with no real problems-nice feature to use Google Books you have to set up a reader account lots of free books in epub or pdfif you have your reader connected it willAUTHORIZE"your reader FOR ADOBE DRM -you can use the reader software to de-authorize if you want.. later
