I appreciate the the blu rays at Redbox. The picture quality is much better than the on demand 'HD' offerings and also it's much cheaper. The only downside is the selection and having to drive there. I wish the remaining Blockbuster stores would remove their aisles and fill the space with with much larger capacity machines than Redbox. They could then compete on price and selection. Maybe they don't see further investments in the business of renting physical discs as worth it though.

Redbox is more than just DVDs for $1.20 regular or $1.50 for bluray.
They have deals. Free DVDs for regular users. A second DVD for $.50. A free game with a DVD. A reduced game rental. They have these deals frequently. They have a Redbox app to help with locations, selection, and rentals. Or you can go on line and browse the kiosks (plural because there are a lot wherever you are) near you. Reserve online and pay only $1.00 the first night (and for me always the last night.) You can play the trailer right online at the Redbox and look at reviews all in the same place. Pretty convenient. By the way, I have been late due to travel usually, by a few hours in a town I wasn't familiar with trying to find a Redbox and Redbox has never charged me for a 2nd night. Great company. A lot like Amazon. And then they have Games in different formats. $2.00 Xbox360, Wii, PS3 If they are out, at the kiosk you are looking at, they give you a "Find Nearby" button. The games are great. You can play a "special" game in a week end (3 days), maybe for $6.00. The ALTERNATIVE is to buy a game for $60 when it first comes out, hold on to it for a few months playing it intermittently, and then sell it back for $15 to $20. Losing say $40. Some people have collections of games that are never played. If you don't care for the game, and you know this you can kick it back after only $2.00 at Redbox, saving $38 (after resale, or $58 after keeping). If you play through it in the week end, you have saved 60-6=$54 or even $56 if you are quick. A great way to check out games. What I do a lot of times while traveling, is rent a movie or a game while out eating before I go to the motel, and watch it or check out the action and then the next day drop it off at a Redbox at the place I rented it from or in the next town if I am traveling. I have a good memory, and the only time I have paid extra, more than 1 day, for a movie, is for "Priest" by Sony. I rented it twice some months apart. I wanted to study it some more. It has great potential. A very interesting story line. If you are home bound or only get to wear the set of pants occasionally, I understand why you go with Netflix and home Pizza delivery. |

Streaming movies - even ones you pay for individually through something like iTunes - are still much more restricted (wrt availability) than movies through RedBox (or movies you can download).

I was at Ingles tonight getting a dozen eggs. As I left I picked up a movie DVD at the RedBox machine.
Nothing unusual about that. The movie was the latest version of "The Thing." I have seen maybe 3 or 4 versions before so I guess that wasn't unusual either. What was unusual was that at the beginning as we looked at that great expanse of white landscape, there was a SeaKing Helicopter delivering the "doomed" to their destination and eventual final resting place in Antarctica. (Us veteran "The Thing" watchers know what always happens!) A SeaKing was the last helicopter I piloted in the military. I had a few before that were faster and quicker and carried some big guns, but the old slow SeaKing is/was one of the workhorses of aviation. Another thought has occurred to me about RedBox. Even Coinstar that owns it now is saying that the life of the DVD is limited, that streaming will take over. I disagree. I think streaming will certainly increase in time, but I believe that the infrastructure to support HD/Blu-Ray films will be a long time coming and will cost too much for the average home. You also have the increased cost of equipment. Plus I think it will not be long before the next big thing requiring even more data comes. Whether it is 3D or even more resolution, I don't know, but I know they are working on it now. That is how they keep their jobs. |

There are several DVDs that I watch FREQUENTLY...enough to fill one DVD rack, I think, if you include all 7 seasons of Start Trek:The Next Generation.
Then there the ones that I wouldn't buy, wouldn't want to own, and if I did come into ownership of them, go right to the used DVD store after one viewing. Though I'd collected these in the past, thanks to Rebox, Netflix and various On Demand sources, my DVD shelves have been near cleaned out of these kind. But in between, there are a bunch of discs that I just can't bring myself to get rid of, yet rarely ever think of watching. Some of these are movies I really like and THINK I may want to watch again, but just never seem to. Others are ones that I may have gotten rid of, but I keep thinking I REALLY will get around to listening to that director's commentary track one day. I forget where I was going with this. I was up to 3am programming last night. I like movies. ApK |

For movies that I like? At least 2x a year. and the convenience of having it on hand right now!
I would like to have 365 different movies on hand so I could watch a different movie every day. But I haven't found that many that I would want to rewatch. BUT I AM WORKING ON IT!!!! ![]() |

I have never seen a Redbox kiosk. So I just looked at a map of Redbox locations in Brooklyn and oddly enough, they are all in the less affluent parts of Brooklyn. Not one in "Brownstone Brooklyn" which is the whiter (if I could be so blunt), more affluent areas. I'm not sure why that is, sure real estate is expensive here but how much real estate does a kiosk take?
The first time I heard about RedBox, I thought that you select the movie, and then it burns a disc for you with that movie on it while you wait. That would be kind of cool, no? Anyway, we mostly do the Time Warner On Demand movies. We don't watch enough movies to make Netflix worth it. I just recently figured out how to connect my laptop to the TV, so we will start watching streaming movies sometimes. So far the only thing I have streamed is a free episode of "Sid the Science Kid" that was on Amazon. eP |

Look up "Blockbuster Kiosks" in your neighborhood, and by the way, those will soon be owned by Redbox (CoinStar). The deal is done according to what I read. |
