Friends of the Library, here on Maui, sells paperbacks for 10 cents and hardbacks for 50 cents. When you live on an island in the middle of the Pacific, things get recycled.

Not really a problem I can relate to, given that there are more Public Domain books available here, from Gutenberg and elsewhere that I would like to read, than I'll ever actually have time to read. I buy a lot of books anyway, but if I was told I could never buy a book ever again, I would still be able to read two or three books every week for the rest of my life without fear of running out or having to enter a library.

That said, I suppose it may depend on what your preferred genre is.

True, they are out of copyright, but I don't think most fall into the category of classics (if by that you mean rather high-brow and difficult). I've found plenty of crime/mystery books I'd put up against the best modern examples. But as the post above said, it may depend on the genre(s) you like. The popularity of all genres tends to wax and wane, and luckily for me, some of the best crime novels are just coming out of copyright.
