No e-ink reader is optimized for pdf. Of the e-ink readers, the Sony probably handles them the best. If what you need is mainly a pdf reader, I would recommend a tablet over an e-ink reader.
I agree the PDF support is very good for an e-ink reader. The only thing I would change is the behavior of page turn buttons when zoomed: it should do some intelligent panning using the page buttons so you can navigate more easily. I think previous Sony models did this, as does Kindle Touch, sort of (but doesn't have landscape right now).

Update: A little more poking around, and I discovered the Page Mode settings (one of the Customize View settings). It's a little tricky, but I can almost achieve what I want by:
- choose More, Orientation to put into landscape mode
- choose Customize View, Crop Page, Manual
- adjust the crop zone so it eliminates headers/footers or at least the whitespace above and below any actual text, make sure it is centered horizontally, Done
- choose Customize View
- choose Page Mode, set to 'fit landscape width'

There are still margins on the sides that could be eliminated if the crop tool worked correctly (the orientation of the crop tool should match the page's orientation, not the screen's).

And with the 2 and 3 column page modes, PDFs with columns can be digested nicely.

I guess there is no PDF reflow as with previous models, but that hardly ever works well, so for me the crop tool and column navigation modes are better.

Join the crowd. I have the STR, the KT & the T1. While I like all 3, the T1 is my favorite....well actually my little pink 350 is my favorite.

Yes, I am having trouble resisting the Kindle Touch! I know my K3 works just fine, and I don't use my K3 as much as my Sony ereaders.

I ordered the T1 in Red today. I have the 650 and love it, but now want the Wifi capability. I'm hoping to love it as much as my 650. I mainly download books from the public library.

I'm sure you'll love it, LUanne! The T1 is half the weight of my old 600, plus the Pearl screen vs the old Vizplex (such a difference!), and twice the battery reserves.

I wouldn't trade my T1 for any other ereader on the market.

It is absolutely perfect for library borrowing. Kindle is better in some respects (such as being able to have it sync between devices, save annotations, and being able to send borrowed books wirelessly from a computer browser), but the Kindle browser does not make a standalone borrowing workflow very pleasant.

In what aspects is it better than a Kindle Touch?

The Sony is better than the Kindle for its dictionary, note taking, navigation, speed, landscape mode, external buttons, size, web browsing, expandable memory, mp3 play back and pdf support. There might be one or two things I might have missed. The Kindle has text to speech and external speakers. The cost of books might be slightly less at Amazon.

Make that "generally less".
Their catalog and user support is also superior.
And Whispernet is extremely valuable to Kindle owners.
(And, ironically, the Kindle hardware is now stiffer and more solid.)

The Kindle Touch is a very nice reader but its target buyer is different from the T1 target buyer; the KT target audience wants convenience and simplicity first with advanced functionality second.

The T1 is better suited to hobbyist/enthusiasts and those of us willing to root it to get something close to a universal reader. (I read on my T1 and PB360; my mother reads on a KT these days. You won't see her round these parts. Too busy reading. )

Plenty of room for both in the market, at least theoretically.
There's a whole lot more people that fit the KT profile (and even more the K4 profile) than fit the T1 profile.

Hopefully the T1 will keep Sony in the game.

I have the Kindle Touch and Sony T1, If buyers are looking for "convenience and simplicity" then the Sony is by far the reader of choice. I use the Kindle for books that I can't get for the Sony. I don't see what the big difference in reader profiles are. Ereader users will get all they could hope for with either device. I use the Sony more often because I can easily navigate through the book I'm reading or between any number of other documents. If a buyer fits the profile of some who wants a device that is well priced, feature rich, easy to use, light weight and durable the Sony T1 should be their first choice.

Being in the UK I did not have the luxury of choice of the Kindle Touch. It was either the Sony, Kindle 4 or Kobo Touch. I personally am not a fan of the Kobo Readers and so it came to a straight shootout between the K4 and the Sony. For me, there was only one winner and that was the Sony. I cant stress enough how useful the touch screen is despite it not being a "neccesity". The ability to swipe for a page turn is invaluable to me, especially in the days of smart phones when your fingers are instantly drawn to prod at a screen!

Whilst I do like the Kindle way of doing things in terms of never having to link to a computer, I do not feel particularly restricted by the Sony not being able to download straight to device. I know this can be done through the browser but with the Sony Store not yet open in the UK it is a bit round the houses! I quite like having to use the PC and will continue to do so even when Sony do pull their fingers out and get the store opened up!

As previously stated both readers have a place in the market and I think it does often come down to personal preference. Just fancied putting in my two pennies worth

I like my PRS T1 as well and I'm in the Uk and have no Store my dilemma was between the Kindle Keyboard and the T1. It was the epub format that really swayed my decision as I was already reading books in that format on my iPod.

No regrets about the reader at all though, my only real regrets are buying an expensive class 10 micro sdhc card (which I realise now was overkill) and buying the Sony lighted case (which I think is overpriced junk).

ITA Tomsem, you can never have enough e-reading devices, right?

So I’ve been longing for a PRS-T1 since November(current main reader is the PRS-950), but was pretty successful in resisting the urge to buy another reader until this weekend. I stopped by Frys and they had the red, black, and white versions in the store for $99. I ended up picking up the white one and so far, I have no buyer’s remorse. (I know talking about buyer’s remorse for an ereader on MobileRead, weird). It’s so much lighter than my 950 and I love the sleek white color and size and the Android functions are so intuitive since I use it on my Nook Color and phone.

My main reason for getting the T1(other than the cheeap price and gadget addiction) is that I wanted to see how well it integrates with Overdrive. I’ve been mostly impressed. While it’s somewhat difficult to find books by subgenre and it doesn’t automatically go to the Dallas Library’s homepage, it does save my information and it probably not more than 4 touches to get to check out a book. I do wish the software on the reader allowed me to return books on the reader rather than having to download the book also to ADE and return the book from there. Oh well, those are minor issues and I’ve been really happy with the functionality of the reader. I’ve read 2 books so far(both epub). One came from the library and the other came from my dropbox (totally awesome btw). I have the latest firmware and the touchscreen works fine and reader is nice and zippy.

Hopefully the T1 will last a good amount of time. I am a bit of a voracious reader and both the silver paint flecked off the page turn buttons on both the 350 and 950 within 6 months of my buying them. The 950 buttons seems to be made of a different material, so I hope it will not show wear so quickly.

Now I’m totally serious, this is the last e-reader I will buy for the next year, promise.
