The Deals, Freebies, and Resources forum here is great!

Nearly every single ebook retailer (Amazon, Sony, Barnes & Noble, etc) has a section of free ebooks, occasionally I'll take a look at their offerings.

I read a lot from the Singapore library. Unfortunately my local library doesn't offer ebooks, but you should check to see if yours does.

I have a great love for the abundance of raw text available on the internet, and a firm awareness that even major publishing houses have been cutting back on editing services--but there's a difference between "any English professor could find dozens of errors in this book" and "POV and verb tense both change twice on the opening page; main character's name is spelled three different ways in the first chapter; one paragraph has seven sets of ellipses; author spells 'illegal' as 'illeagle'."

I found them all at secondhand shops, yard sales etc and never spent more the a few dollars max. Occasionally, if I couldn't find what I want I would buy it new but this was not often.

Since having the e-reader I find that I am not using it as I can't find any decent books without paying full store price. For example - i just bought a book for $2 and the e-version is $24.99. I am wondering if I have wasted my money ( my husband certainly thinks so). I have checked out various sites and can't seem to find any with decent, newish title and authors nor the non-fiction titles that interest me. Can anyone help or is my husband correct? I have found good titles form the Singapore International Library however they are all borrowed and expire after about 2 weeks.
If you want big name authors from the big publishers, you'll pay full price. The Publishers have a stranglehold on the retailers. Publishers set the prices, and the retailers can only sell at those prices. Blame Apple for that. It's called Agency Pricing.

Now, you can get ebooks from the library. Many libraries do this. Is freeeeee.

If you are willing to try indie authors, there are tons of good books for free, or low price.

Plus Mobileread, and Project Gutenberg, have tons of free public domain books. All the classics, none of the expense.

Since I'm always on the computer at work and a couple of hours at home per day I look for deals all of the time. I look for things like the Ed Mcbain $1 ebook sale that happened on Amazon last week and ended up spending $40 for 36 books in 10 minutes. I also took the time and downloaded several hundred Pulp Fiction ebooks off Manybooks.com and donated $10 for them. I should give them more. You simply have to teach yourself a new way to shop.

So, Catharine, did you waste your money? Does any of this sound helpful to you?

The Singapore library has a 21 day lending period. If you're an avid reader that may be enough. Also if you used to second hand books, then you're not looking for the most recent releases. There are good ebooks that are 2-3 years old that you can renew at the library as well.
