You don't need Acrobat for this. Processtext.com has a nice PDF converter for about US$20, and pdftohtml is free.

Are these steps really worth pursuing? I mean, are the results better than what one gets with the stylus-assisted zooming option? Are there some real-life comparison photos one could peruse?

A full 8.5x10 sized document moved to the iliad is too small to read for
my old eyes

Yes, you can zoom the display, but then you will have to scroll around
the image to see it all. If I am reading a long document the fiddling with
the scrolling is just too tedious.

It depends... I usually turn pdf books (all text, with italics/bolds/etc., and maybe a couple of images) into html (or Word docs), format/reflow into smaller pages and turn into pdf again. But some A4/letter pdfs are too hard to reformat any smaller (comics, text books), and then you either zoom in/crop out the margins of the original, or turn to landscape; in which case, the iLiad will take a "next page" flip to go to the bottom of the page, and then to the next page. Very doable.

I agree with you that the image quality (as far as I've seen from screenshots of other eink machines) is very noticeable.
