In the beginning, I didn't like the idea of buying from the only store in town either ... this is why I first chose Sony (and for the highlighting features).
Now I do use the ereader mainly for studies. I highlight a lot. When I am on the go I want to use my ereader. When I come home, sometimes I want to read on my Mac and work alongside in another app. I want the same highlights to appear on the Mac app as well. Sometimes I might even want to read my books in the browser (if I have find a reference or so) or even on my mobile. And the highlights should be there as well.

All this doesn't come for free. (Unless you have a lot of time to spare and can set up something yourself). I just want to read.

The service (Whispersync) which comes with the Kindle is very convenient and it works. So I have to buy from this one store now, but I learnt to accept it, because I get the service as well.

Now my father i.e. doesn't need all this. He is happy with just reading his book on his ereader. It's really down to what you need (or think you need).

I think Sony missed the boat (outside the US). They really should have had a Whispersync competitor and global store ready by the release of the T1. It seems like their service offering is not as driven as in example Kobo's or Amazon's. Anyways, just my 5 cents

apples and oranges

If the PHugger replaced a PRS-505 with a Kindle 3 3G, I'm not surprised the new one seems better.

Apples and oranges, I say. I geuss Phugger dosn't realize that a K3 3G is, like 3K generations better than the old ereader and it isn't even the only new gen ereader out there.

I use a T1 and it allows me to wirelessly get books from at least a dozen different sources which I've tried, most of which are commercial. I need to have wifi access to do it 'cause the T1 ain't got 3G.

If 3G is the killer argument, ok, but then it's still apples and oranges because the K3 3G costs more.

So if people want to bind themselves to THE ONE AND ONLY AMAZON just because they're not at home enough to do their ebook shopping from there, hey fine with me.

Ever since my falling out with lots of publisher's DRM policy, my T1 is turning into a very low, lower, lowest budget ereader indeed.

You either completely missed my point or more likely just didn't read it. I've had my 505 for over 4 years. It's not a T1 nor can I turn it into a T1. I love the Sony PRS-505 Hardware and would still be using it if the Store and Software didn't suck as much as they do. Did you read the part where I mentioned that I bought a book from the Sony Store and couldn't sync it with my 505? I am no longer willing to fight with Sony's feeble software every time a new version comes out. I do not want to Convert, Strip DRM, Sync, or Manage my book collection. I want to purchase books and read them. Sony makes great book reader hardware, but they haven't figured out how to make the experience simple and reliable for the PRS-505. This is why I'm now using a Kindle.

Best regards,
PCH

Nope, don't want any dedicated store what so ever.

I like options!

Use a T1!

ps: I don't think they're getting it

Yes, you have options, but do all your books, highlights and bookmarks get sync'd across all your devices automatically? Are all your annotations and books backed up online automatically? If you get a new device, will all your books and annotations automatically appear on them? [Again, in the UK we don't have a Sony store or sync service]
That's what I said above: The service has a price ... and that's being locked in. But I don't have to worry about all this any more as it is done automatically and I can fully focus on reading now. No time wasted any more with buggy Sony software.

Having had a Kindle longer than my Sonys I can sympathize with OP, no question the Kindle is a lot easier if you just want to buy books in a simple manner, read them and remove them. I can load up in an airport (I have WiFi only model but tether it to my phone) before a trip. For those of you that haven't tried the Kindle, the obvious difference is the "in-store experience". Amazon's Kindle shop is just soo much better than what you get from Sony. Don't get me wrong, Sony is trying hard, but it has been around a lot longer than Amazon and it has been a global corporation for decades, yet their in-store experience is very very parochial.

I find this most unfortunate. Sony has the potential to be a true competitor with Amazon, even surpassing them. But the truth is that e-Readers and bookstores probably donät make a dent in Sony's accounting figures, hence they are treated likewise.

Well said. I really like my Sony 350 & T1. BUT I seldom shop in the Sony Store or use the software. Buying books via Amazon for my Kindle is so much easier that at times I find myself reading with my KT more than with my T1 or 350.
