Here's my collections:

Current Read (1)
Library Books (3)
To be Read (43)
Biography/History/Historical Fiction (8)
Christian (5)
Magazines/Kindle Singles/Novellas (9)
Mystery/Adventure (16)
Non-Fiction (2)
Science Fiction (20)

I have a K3 KSO so that list of collections fills the Home page. I've struggled with this list to make it usable on a daily basis and to make books easier to find. I work to keep my total number of items on the Kindle (as shown on the Home page) less than 100 - this includes the 9 categories.

The "magazines" category is for those from sources other than Amazon. Amazon mags cannot be put in categories, which is irritating.

I basically use collections to hold series. I do tend to read a lot of stuff that are part of series, and it seems to work as well as anything else for me. That said, I haven't quite figured out how I want to deal with the star wars books, because I'd kinda like to keep them in chronological order, but haven't really figured out the best way to do that.

Besides why have all that space and not use it???
After moving several times, I've learned that continually filling up all my available space with stuff rarely works out well in the end.

My Kindle rarely leaves my house (and neither do I), so I'm never "caught" without a book to read. Plus, I almost never change my mind... once I start a book, I tend to finish it. So five or six books on my Kindle can represent anywhere from 3-10 weeks' worth of reading for me. I'm never going to be away from my main ebook cache (or the Amazon store) for that length of time. And it's not like my reading chair is that far away from my PC.

This is usually what I do for my Galaxy Tab, which is my reader for night time reading and when I forget to charge my kindle, which is more often than I am going to admit to.

I also rarely buy any books from the kindle itself, I usually buy my books from the comfort of my computer. I also like to do the majority of my purchases from Amazon so I have the access of the archives if I should want to select something that is not on my kindle. And I too do not like to stop a book once I've started it. But there have been many times where I am jumping around series to spice up the selection.

Oh dear. I have over 50 collections. I won't list them all here, but I can demonstrate how I use them.

First, I have several genre collections, such as:
Fiction: Horror
Fiction: Suspense
Non-Fiction: Biographical
Non-Fiction: History
Short Fiction: Horror

and so on. You can see my sort of pseudo-hierarchy that I use to make up for not having a sub-collections feature.

Then I have "special collections". These are created from my Reading Lists (which I capitalized because I'm referring to my use of the Reading List Plugin). These lists contain books which are marked for special reading goals, so those collections are:

KFreebies (because I'm trying to make progress in the many Kindle Freebies I've acquired)
Harlequin Decimation (yeah, I have too many Harlequins)

Finally, I have collections for certain series I plan to read this year:
Beasthouse
Vampire/Mayfair
Millennium Trilogy
Hollows

Within this collection, the books have been retitled with the metadata plugboards as such:
SeriesName 1 - Book Title

I have nearly 500 books on my Kindle. It is my selection of reading material for the whole year. Now, I don't plan to read ALL of them this year, I just like to have a variety available so this is sort of a curated subset of my library. I never know what I will be in the mood to read next.

I think I win for simplicity. I have four collections, three of which are self-explanatory:

Finished Reading
To Be Read
Samples
Miscellaneous (reference books & various documents from my PC)

I have a number of genre-based collections, though some have mutated into curious combos (like "Travel and Food") as I try to find places to shoehorn in new books.

I've got all Active content sorted in its own collection. Also there's a "Transferred" collection that's a general import bin of magazine articles, personal documents, and other things that aren't quite books, don't have anyplace else to go, and/or need to have their formatting fixed at some point.

It amounts to almost three full screens of categories...and the system worked okay for awhile, but I'm thinking on giving it up. For one thing, even with Calibre it can be a chore to manage (doesn't help that I'm too OCD for my own good sometimes). For another, my Kindle (K3) is running painfully, horribly slow these days. As in: hit "Home" key, wait 30 seconds to get there; hit "Next Page", wait 10 seconds to get there; select desired Collection, wait 15 seconds...

I've probably got two to three hundred books on the thing at the moment. The device still has 2/3 of its memory free; but I'm suspecting that Amazon never really expected you to be able to come anywhere near filling the thing with books without it coming to a crawl. My new plan is to start over with Reset to Factory Settings, and then be conservative about how many books to have loaded on my Kindle from my Calibre and Amazon libraries at any one time.

I'll have to be careful about it, though...I've put way too many hours into Triple Town when I'm done reading for the day, and I couldn't bear to lose my high scores!

Before doing a factory reset, try clearing your search index and letting it re-index. I have had some good experiences with resetting my search index and the speed picking back up. But I've also noticed even with a clean re-indexing the kindle does not do well with more than 600 books on it. And I too agree Amazon did not give enough thought to the kindles actually being able to run with a significant amount of books on it. This is my one pet peeve with them, they tell you you can have thousands of books but it actually cannot handle thousands of books.

I have only one collection: Finished Books. For the ones that don't fit into that category, I use the search facility.

I like Home to be a single page, containing collections and whatever book(s) I'm currently reading. I have:

To Be Read (396)
Fiction - Permanent Collection (146)
Reference (16)
Work (10)
Travel and Language Learning (14)
Nonfiction - Permanent Collection (37)

Right now, I have two books that I'm currently reading, the empty (and to me, useless) "Archived Items (0)," which altogether leaves my Home page delightfully uncluttered.

I really wish Amazon would introduce nested collections...but I doubt there's much interest on their part in upgrading the firmware on the K3.
