Qt will make use of SSE2, and is recommended to be compiled with it - as such you're most likely you were just running into issues with the distro's shared libs. Then again, using something of that age with any binary-centric distro is going to be a bit problematic.

If you are looking for something a little lighter than Ubuntu 11.10, I can't help but mentioning the debian spin off of CrunchBang. Openbox You can always try a live USB.

I run it on a asus EEE PC900a atom among others. 1 gb mem. You can easily get a backports if you choose. I have stuck with it for awhile. Really helpful forum.
