If they're asking for which two activities users do the most, shouldn't those numbers add up to 200% (they only add up to 175.6)

Or they take that option to mean other apps.

I'm not particularly surprised by the height of the ebooks column. I suspect a sizable portion of the first adopters of the Fire were previous/current Kindle owners, who already have a hefty investment in Amazon. Now if they split out NEW Kindle owners from previous Kindle owners, I would expect the graphs to change some.
Questions the graph doesn't answer: Where are the magazine readers? What about checking email? Are there separate Android apps for that? Anecdotal observations from two co-workers who do NOT e-read on their brand new Fires - they were looking for mini-tablets: One loves it and has used it daily since Christmas and has to fight her spouse for it. The other returned hers. She has the first PanDigital Novel Black that she uses for her internet/email stuff (and a 18 month old Droid phone), and doesn't think the Fire is enough of an improvement, given the higher price. She paid around $120 for her PanDigital at Kohl's over a year ago. |

One thing to note is that about 1/4 of Fire users are not happy with the battery life. So there is room for e-ink there. In a simlar vein, I love my Nook Tablet, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Nook STR in the battery department. |

Most people probably consider "apps" to be additional ones that they install themselves, rather than those pre-installed on the device.

Can we now finally bury the meme that LCD tablets aren't suitable for reading? Millions of folks are using their LCD tablets primarily for reading.
Eink has its advantages and devotees for sure. But it's now demonstrably tru that millions find reading on LCD tablets just fine. Lee |

Not sure. But on my Nook Color, the user just selects the cover of the book he or she wants to read and the book is opened. I'm assuming the Fire does something similar. I can see how casual users wouldn't consider that the same as running an app from a list, or an app they downloaded themselves. But yes it's still an app.

There's no point trying to be a purist about what's an app. It's clear enough from the context that "use apps" refers to programs that do things rather than programs that view things, as distinct from games, media or browsing.
There's also nothing remotely surprising in the fact that people who bought an ereader-branded tablet are using it primarily to read. A lot of people first get exposed to e-books on their smartphones, and aren't interested in giving up the conveniences of reading on a color, backlit screen with decent hardware behind it. |
