No, if you see several bids in a row from the same person it's eBay's "auto-bidding" process at work. You say "I'm willing to pay a maximum of $x" and the system automatically places bids for you if someone else places a bid which is above your current bid but below your maximum.

The system won't let you place another bid if you're already the maximum bidder.

I've never had a serious problem buying and selling on eBay over the past 9 years, but now I'm convinced that it has its fair share of careless people/scammers when it comes to hot items.

Yes... I'll give you a $20 bill if you pay me $50.

hmm...I'm tempted to sell my kindle via "buy now" at $850 with a $25 shipping and handling fee. I get my Kindle on Tuesday.

I could then use the $450 to pay for a year's worth of books. Now, I'm wishing I bought 2 of them.

If I were Amazon, I would invest the funds to drive every Kindle auction up over $1,000. What a creatively subtle astroturfing effort that would be.

Looks like he got himself (and/or others) in trouble, because he now updated his auction. Basically, he wants people to click on his Amazon Affiliate link, which will give him 10% for each Kindle purchase, or $40 (plus whatever people bid on his eBay auction). For that, he'll give $20 back to the buyer. It's clearly against Amazon Affiliate TOS, which does not allow any kind of purchase "incentives".

Wow, kindles are selling for upwards of $600-$700 all over on ebay.

If there was any doubt Kindle was a hit, there is none now.

I can see that happening with a console or an iphone, but who would have thunk it possible that a little ole ereader could cause such a supply/demand disparity.

I know there are plenty of people who want them for Christmas so I suppose people are willing to pay a premium because it's a gift. I usually see that more with kids' gifts, though (like Wiis or whatever the Elmo du jour is). I'm thrilled to have my Kindle now, especially since I'm traveling for the holiday, but I'm a grown up. I wouldn't have been weepy on Christmas morning if Santa left me a raincheck for a Kindle. I'd just deal with the wait rather than pay a premium of hundreds of dollars.
