I just found the tool HotSwap. There is a 32-bit and 64 bit version. Works perfectly for me and lives in the systray. Configuration for the Kobo: right click on tray icon -> 'Device Type'. Then check 'Removable disc drives' AND 'Safely removable devices'. The rest is self explanatory.
