I've just had a strange occurrance, which seems to be a consequence of the firmware update.
As I said above, I applied the upgrade, and it all seemed to go smoothly. A few minutes ago, though, I wanted to look up a word in the dictionary, and it popped up a message saying "No dictionaries are installed". I looked on the Home screen, and it listed the two dictionaries I have, "Oxford English Dictionary", and "New Oxford American Dictionary", but when I went to "Settings/Select Default Dictionary" it again said that there were no dictionaries installed, and asked me if I wanted to go to "Archived Items" and download one. I did so, and the "New Oxford American Dictionary" was in the archive (I normally use the British English "Oxford English Dictionary", but that wasn't listed.). I downloaded this dictionary, and went back to "Settings/Select Default Dictionary". To my surprise, it now listed THREE dictionaries as being available: "Oxford English Dictionary" and TWO copies of the "New Oxford American Dictionary". I selected the "Oxford English Dictionary" and it's working fine again. I've subsequently deleted the extra copy of the NEAD. It looks as if the upgrade made it "forget" what dictionaries were installed, but downloading something from the Archive did a re-scan which located them all again. Anyone else had this problem? |

Hmmm. I didn't detect any change to the handling of dictionaries but maybe that signals that they are starting to do work to fix the dictionary mess they've created. Ultimately, the default by language approach does not work without a manual override. When reading an English book with a few foreign language words you need to be able to override the default English dictionary for those specific words.

Maybe they could tweak it to make it more intuitive for some users, but there's nothing inherently wrong with the scrolling. Last edited by mikeschr; 01-17-2012 at 01:33 PM. |

When I attempt to swipe the entire length of the screen, it 'scrolls' before my swipe is even half way, and I'm not lifting my finger at all. And the resulting scroll is exactly the same as when I do a short swipe (only about 2/3 page). I'm all for having more granular scrolling (both partial and full) but without 'full' page scrolling it just seems broken. Shown are 3 screen captures: 1 - starting position 2 - swipe starting at bottom (next to 'The Mugger') and going all the way to the top 3 - swipe starting at bottom (same start location) and going up about an inch As you can see the result of 2 and 3 are the same. The text my finger was next to has moved up only to about 2/3 of the way to the top, not to the top. |

There is a definite performance increase here. Excuse my non scientific testing, but I updated my KT and left my wife's with the original software. Mine's now about 2x as fast on every operation (menus, page turns, home button, etc.).
Cool update, thanks Amazon! |

It sounds like you're doing the same thing, so there's either a subtle difference in the way we're swiping or a difference in our hardware. If you could find another Touch to try scrolling on, that might help, but I wouldn't think the demo units in stores are set up to allow browsing. |

the problem with the dictionary not getting selected is due to restarting the device. I've had this problem occasionally even before the update.
one major change that I noticed with the new update is the speed of highlighting text and the dictionary lookup. They are more responsive than before. |

How can I downgrade to 5.0.0? Can someone direct me to the firmware or upload the bin file? Well or even a version above 5.0.0 and below 5.0.3 (if there is such a thing) will be fine. Thanks
Edit: All in all, do you recommend updating to firmware 5.0.3? |

I've updated to 5.0.3 before even using the device with the older firmware. I've got no problems with 5.0.3 after two days of quite extensive use. At this moment, I don't see why you wouldn't upgrade.

The strange thing is not that there was no dictionary selected, but that when I tried to select a dictionary, it said that there were none present.
