I realize that. That is why Amazon should be looking at the screens before shipping to make sure the screens are up to standard. The demo KT I saw was not of an acceptable standard.

![]() P.S. Don't burn your bridges at both ends! Actually, a lot of the perceptible difference in the new kindles is caused by the high specular reflectivity of the front bezels. This requires that they be compared in the same position, at the same angle, from the same viewpoint, or the bezels will appear to be different shades of bright or dark gray, affecting the perceived brightness and contrast of the eInk display. Also, each display needs to be "exercised" with multiple full flash updates (10 to 12 is recommended) to reduce oil viscosity and to detach and break up zinc oxide clumps, before doing an honest visual comparison. There's no smoke without fire. A lot of kindle owners are are noting a noticeable difference in the quality of e-ink screens between identical or similar Kindle models. I have no doubt they are right. Why some people are so ardently denying it is there own business.
The same controversy does not exist to the same level with other devices. What I suspect has happened is that Amazon is paying less for their screens by not insisting on the highest quality control standards. That is why people are seeing such a wide variety in quality. There are excellent and not so excellent screens in the same batch. I guess Amazon figures that most people won't notice the difference, or if they do, they won't question it. Of course that's speculation, but it explains what people are reporting. In any case, the poorest grade pearl screen is probably more than adequate to read on. But for the connoisseur, it could be annoying. |

I had a Sony Reader PRS-505 and it was the first reader to use Vizplex. The screen on that was better then the screen on the KT demo unit I saw at Walmart.

One theory that was given in the other thread said it could be possible Amazon's is using a few test units settings to calibrate a batch and with the way eINK varies there are some that get calibrated wrong which explains why my K4 looks the way it does.

If you haven't already done so, might I suggest you install bold fonts to improve clarity. I recently read about a font called Amasis on these forums that would do the trick. |
