Unfortunately in Australia at least, not much history is taught anymore. Modern stuff yes, but not much of anything else. Education in my belief is woeful here in Australia.
My youngest has just finished school, so I have seen first hand how bad it was. Kelly knows who Captain Cook was, but nothing about what he actually achieved. The 18th-19th centuries were golden years for the Royal Navy explorers. Anson, Cook, Flinders etc |

Well, I like to read up on the many interesting subjects in history that are not covered well in school. Like Byzantium, Carthage, The Plague, etc. Cook is in the same category in that all these subject were basically just mentioned in school. We weren't given any real background information. (and I am probably about your age, Sabredog)

True
I have had a lifelong passion regarding history, particularly naval history. But I did study history in my upper school years and that course IMHO was far superior to the curriculum taught for those years (year 11-12) currently. What has not improved any is the teaching of the history of Australia. We have a rich history here and it is a great shame a lot of it is not taught to high school students. |
