Made a call today to the 855 number and had a little chat with a cr,so the suggestion was to do a reset, sync and drag the side loaded books back
using ADE.
I hear the code is open source,so that would be worth looking into.
There's too many good books to read to spend time chasing bugs down the yellow brick road.

I should revert to 1.9.14. Once again i lost every single setting in my kobo touch. It cannot shut down properly 80% of the times. and i lost all my settings twice.

Is there a thread that indicates hot to revert to an old firmware?

I was having the setup issue continually. Tried factory resets a few times and reinstal of desktop software. nthing seemed to help. I did discover that if i went to home screen before shutting down or going to sleep mode that that then stopped the setup from happening. So now I always go to home page before shutting down and have not have the issue since. I also found that the issue seemed to happen more with third party books than with kobo books but was happening ocasionally with them as well. I know going to the home page before shutting down isn't a fix but it is a pretty simple work around.

For me this happens around once a week. I always turn it off at night. It doesn't bother me that much, except when I'm turning it on the bus and I have to select all those new options with one hand only.

It has happened to me twice (w/1.9.16). Once right after I synced and the other time I might have jiggled the switch while the KT was shutting down. On restart both times I was presented with the setup screen which I could dismiss. Then the language screen followed by a hearty 'Welcome'. I had to reset all my 'settings' but other wise all was the same. (not using an SD card)

This has happened to me once, but then I was turning the power switch several times when the maching was shutting down. After that, I have always just turned the power switch and kept it turned until the machine did shut down.

Mum's KT has also begun showing the setup bug, one of those annoying intermittent faults, and you wonder, is it a firmware bug, or is it a hardware fault, like a bit of bad flash memory?

I think it's a firmwire bug and not when turning it on, but when turning it off. I think some operations don't complete when shutting down and when it turns on it finds some sort of invalid state. Similar, when you unplug your computer and the next time you open Windows it goes to a different booting route telling it wasn't shut down correctly, fortunately it doesn't ask you to reinstall the system.

If you hold the power button for a longer time, the Kobo will go to setup screen. I don't know exactly how long (5 to 10 seconds, maybe), but I never hold the button longer than it takes for the text to disappear if I want to power off.

I've had the set-up problem a few times in the last month and have come to the same conclusion as alexul.

Sometimes when I turn the reader off, my finger slips off the switch. It's after those shutdowns that I have to set up again when I turn it back on.

My solution has been to just put the reader to sleep and let it turn off on it's own after x minutes. (I can't remember what I set it to.) For some reason I never have finger trouble putting it in sleep mode.

I've had this problem more than a couple of times but haven't encountered it for the past few days. I read in a thread that if you go back to the home screen before turning it off it'll help. I did this once or twice and it did work.

I think before I was rather impatient and kept sliding the power button for the KT to power up - would this be why I kept getting the setup screen? Now, once I see the blue light, I wait and I haven't encountered the setup screen since.

Wink setup screen

What i find odd is the number of Kobo users who are running into this annoyance.
Alot of the posts on this subject may trigger a proper method of how to use this funny gadjet, since the manual didn't have much to say.
I'm glad my setup screen has faded into darkness lately, not sure why.
I ponder the thought of various ways to use the power slider and its timing effects on the tiny brain inside this gadjet.
Maybe it's a learning curve on the part of the kobo think tank.
