Tags and Series are completely independent things in Calibre.

I think you are getting this mixed up with the Sony idea of a Collection as under default Calibre settings for the Sony plugin both tags and series are used to create collections. This is, however, completely customisable behaviour so there is no rigorouse link between the Calibre tags/series and the Sony collections.
