I don't think I'll bother, thanks . I originally read them when I was a teenager, and didn't realise at the time just how awful they were. My 35 years or so of subsequent reading experience has somewhat improved my taste in reading matter.

Ah, what if. What if he hadn't gone down that path?

I remember loving those books. There were no more John Carter books to read - and I had read the Ace Tolkiens, the Conan books (Carter, deCamp), the Thongor, the Brak The Barbarian, et al......and then the Norman books....turned.

...but what if......

I saw a trailer for the movie. I must say that I was pretty surprised that it's being put out by Disney.

Ummm....

He would have had to put some actual work into his writing and make the books different from one another?

While risking NOT making a ton of money from young people in the throes of puberty?

John Carter?

Looks a good movie. Characters are a tad overdressed though

I have recently been reading the recent Warlord of Mars comic book series. Excellent artwork and quite faithful to ERB's books.

As mentioned, skip the GORs after 3. Pure trash. Instead, read the John Carter of Mars series from Edgar Rice Burroughs. Then read the Tarzan books. All very similar writing style. The Gor books try to copy the sttyle of ERB and are not bad but turn into trash.

I just downloaded it and will read a chapter to see if I like it.

At first I read this as meaning that Disney was putting out a Gor movie and I made this face: O_o

I now confess to a certain morbid curiosity as to what the Disneyfied sanitized animated version of Gor, complete with cutesy cartoon sidekick animals and song-and-dance musical numbers, would look like.

For the record, I also sometimes wonder what the Disney kiddie versions of Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies will look like in another fifty years or so when they can stripmine them from the public domain if they don't manage to push through yet another copyright extension act.

Disney/Pixar are making a movie based on ERB's Princess of Mars called John Carter. The trailers look excellent, though they main characters are a bit overdressed

The movie release date is early this year IIRC.

There were two lamentable movies made in the 80's based on the Gor series. I have both on VHS, picked up at a video stores bargain table, many moons ago.

Love to read your opinion on Amathar, Dr Dribb.
