Well, if they use DRM, then they should guarantee that you should at least be able to read it. Life isn't a one way street. You don't get all privileges and no responsibilities as much as some wish it were so. I agree with you that it's my responsibility to keep my books back up (which I do). But this sort of thing is why I also format shift all my books so I'm not dependent on a specific app to be able to read them. I learned my lesson years ago when peanut press got out of the ebook business leaving it's customers unable to read the books they had purchased.

Of course I'd always recommend removing the DRM as soon as you buy a book, but even if you don't, the closure of this particular bookstore shouldn't cause anyone any problems. Last edited by HarryT; 12-31-2011 at 03:49 PM. |

Simple. Foreigners took away access to what I paid for. Pretty straightforward.

Hang on a minute. You bought your book and you presumably downloaded it. I'm pretty sure that W.H. Smith's made no guarantee to you to store it for you indefinitely, did they? You have your download. This does not change that fact. Once you've downloaded it, it's your responsibility to keep it safe, not the book shop's responsibility.

The move of the accounts to Kobo is needed to provide for future (replacement) downloads, not to ensure continued use of the existing file.
As long as the Adobe authorization servers are in place (one of the reasons for the Adobe tax on ADEPT epubs) any pre-downloaded ebook will still be readable as long as ADE knows of it. The "chokepoint" is ADE, not the (generic) ebookstore. Edit: DRM'ed ebooks are ebooks with leashes. And it is Adobe that holds the leash on Adept ebooks. Yes, that's the point that I was making. This move has no impact on the use of purchased books on any current or future ADE devices that the purchaser may have; it seems unreasonable to me to demand a refund of the price of the book as a result, given that you have lost nothing.

WH Smith was just a front for Adobe just as Kobo is also (albeit somewhat reluctantly: Kepubs!) a front for generic Adept ebooks. Adobe is the true conduit for reading rights; the ebookstore is just the checkout counter. |

A bunch of mine didn't transfer either - not downloadable from smiths either - I'm guessing the editions got pulled as they were sorting out rights or poor formatting. No particular problem as I have downloads and backups already.

I hate to say it, but you have to deal with reality, and the reality is: Nobody cares about your ebook library as much as you do. If you want to keep it, you don't trust any retailer or any DRM-provider or anyone at all to keep it for you.
I've said before that DRM makes crooks of honest people, and I still believe it. If you want to keep your library of ebooks safe and readable, you have to strip DRM. Is it right? Is it fair? Doesn't matter. It is what it is. |
