Personally, I don't like reading in PDF, unless I have too, because of formatting (technical docs). If you want to annotate a PDF, the best/cheapest software that I have found is PDF Annotator. If you use fullscreen mode, it is tolerable for reading, except for the way it handles paging in this mode (unless they fixed that problem).

As they're free, you might as well try them all and see which one you prefer. A lot also depends on what books you want to read (eg public domain or proprietary).

The other contenders are Mobipocket, Adobe Digital Editions, and Openberg Lector. for pdfs try Foxit Reader.

Adobe's own Acrobat Reader software is a good place to start. It's 100% compatible with PDF since they originated the standard, and this includes all DRM'd files as well as unprotected ones. I prefer it to Adobe's other software, Digital Editions, because the latter has sluggish performance and many rough edges in its interface. Annotation, however, is a hit-or-miss affair for Reader, depending on the settings in the PDF file (as set by the author/publisher).

Adobe Reader 8 is 100% INCOMPATIBLE with purchased DRM laden PDF. So please do not tell other that it is 100% compatible. Especially when it is not.

As an example of level of detail you need to know about Adobe products in order to read their e-books, see Fictionwise's Adobe Reader eBook FAQ. Instructions that include software version numbers are not typically needed for other kinds of e-books. On the other hand, until I read this FAQ I did not know that Adobe Reader 7.0 reads Adobe e-books on the Mac (it does not do so under Linux, for example). There are relatively few e-book reader software options for the Mac, so that is a plus.

If you have both Adobe Reader 8.0 and Adobe Digital Editions installed on a PC, I think Adobe Reader (more or less) transparently passes you to Digital Editions when asked to open an e-book. However, Digital Editions is a very basic e-book reader - particularly compared to the Desktop versions of most other reader software.

Correct, but Digital Editions will work with those. Adobe has split eBook reading and document reading.

Oops, sorry, I was basing my reply on old information. I was unaware of the move to transfer all DRM support to Digital Editions. That's what I get for not reading DRM'd material very often.
