What? If you are talking about Public Domain, PD books are available in both EPUB and MOBI here in MOBILEREAD, FEEDBOOK and other sites. And if you are talking freebies and free books, Amazon probably has more of them than any other store.

Why are you taking him seriously? It's obvious he has a beef with being proven wrong.

This is utter balderdash; there is at least as much "free stuff" available for the Kindle as in ePub format. I have no axe to grind here, since I own both a Kindle and a Sony.

If by locking you in you mean that you can buy books from Amazon and pretty much every independent e-book vendor, most sell Mobi and E-Pub because it makes good sense to sell both, and all the websites that provide public domain books for free, which provide books both in Mobi and EPub, then yes you are locked in.

Essentially, you cannot buy books from Sony (sucky bookstore), Barnes and Noble (already not available for any one outside the US without jumping through hopes) and Kobo but you can from a large number of other sites.

Nevermind that Amazon has the largest e-book store which means that she is likely to find what she wants to read there at a competitive price so she probably won't have to leave Amazon.

And you talk about Kindle owners being foaming at the mouth fan boys. I am starting to wonder if Jon has managed to take over your account and passing on his anti-Amazon campaign under another name.

haha my word this little post has brought out the handbags at five paces on-line equivalent. Think I'm going to go for the Kindle with Wifi only as £60 for 3G which I'm not sure she will use is pointless. Thanks for the help.

I was thinking of gutenberg which doesn't offer mobi.

*Correction: It does.

No, they weren't because they had concerns that were genuine in their view.

You on the other hand just walked in here and suggested that owning a kindle automatically makes one a "foaming-at-the-mouth fan-boy zealot". That is trolling and nothing else.

I'm a huge Sony fan but for a mom I would say get a Kindle because of its association with the Amazon store. It will be much easier for your mom to use since she won't have to plug it in a computer to load the books. The Sony T1 has the capability to download books straight to the device but Sony's bookstore is not very good compared to Amazon. I'm guessing your mom will not be wanting to remove DRM or change formats or anything like that.

British people don't have a "mom"; they have a "mum" .

try the waterstones website - http://www.waterstones.com/waterston...-readers/1918/ - they are selling the cybook opus for £50 pounds and the case for a fiver and it might be just the ticket.
small, light and very easy to use.

cheers,mick.

have you ever used an ebook? If not, I'd first of all play around with one in a store to see how you find them - you will find the Sony models in Waterstones, and the Kobo in WHSmith, while the Kindles are available in some Tesco stores (though I am not sure whether you can play around with them). I guess you already know about book formats, just bear in mind that the adobe DRM formats read by sony and kobo are also available from independent bookstores such as Foyle's (but of course the selection that Amazon has is huge).

The biggest issue is the library books - if your mum already uses the library, she's almost certain to want to use the ereader with it, and the Kindle just simply will not work, and there's no indication that's going to change any time soon.

Personally, I vote for the Sony T1, but that's because it satisfied everything on my quite picky list. OTOH, if you want to get a cheaper reader, the Kobo's currently being sold at around £67 (Waterstones, Asda, Currys), and it does work with UK libraries.
