I just downloaded it and it's around 180mb.
EDIT: 182.3mb to be exact. Last edited by janicew; 12-20-2011 at 10:28 AM. |

For those not familiar with it, the QuickView screen displayed the last accessed album, video, image, etc. and had the option of "pin"ing media elements to that screen for easy access. It was, IMO, a brilliant design that enabled regularly accessed media to be easily accessible without having to burrow through the collection of stuff. As an intermediate step, having the carousel display only the last item for each category (music, video, photo, app, book, site, etc.) would be helpful, IMO. |

I still haven't gotten the update. I think I'm just going to wait but I wonder what is taking so long...
Anyway, from what I've read I'm not hearing that this is the mega update I was expecting. Maybe people are just not talking about it but I was hoping for some actual multi-touch gestures to solve basic interface problems (i.e. two finger slide up to remove something from the carousel), easier access to volume controls, better personal doc/book management, and most importantly all the things we've been missing from the Reader app like page numbers, TTS, X-Ray, social sharing, etc. So far this update sounds like it adds the option to lock wifi for parental control and maybe a few bug fixes. No? @willysjeepman: that sounds like a much better idea - don't have apps in the carousel, only media, or maybe some apps (like games) that could be tagged to appear in the carousel, and others that could be tagged (like mail and other commonly used apps) to never appear in the carousel. Send that idea to Jeff! |

I just downloaded the update using jeremy81's link (https://s3.amazonaws.com/kindle-fire...1E_3103920.bin) and sideloaded it to the kindleupdates folder using ES File Explorer and the Update Your Kindle button was no longer greyed out and I was able to update the Fire. The update seems to be mostly under an under the hood performance update. My fire does run smoother, smoother scrolling for sure, so that's nice. The touch sensitivity seems better too. I used to have to hit buttons more than once sometimes.
The obvious changes you can see are the data separations, the ability to remove items from the carousel, although they are put back when you open them again. There's really no customization at all so that was disappointing. There's also the option to lock wifi access. Also, archived book no longer show up on the carousel. Quote:

I just updated. I sideloaded the update with Jeremy's link and was able to update. Didn't take long at all. I tried the sync and sleep thing, but that didn't do it for me.
WiFi lock doesn't really help me out, I've just secured purchases for when the kids play. Mine are old enough they are doing things with wifi that are totally appropriate, so I don't want to block that. Although it's an interesting option for some. I did clear almost everything off the Carousel. Basically I went all the way to the end and cleared most everything off. I don't have near as many books as many of you do since I've been a kindle user for less than a year, but it didn't take long and going to the end first meant the next one just popped up. I could get a nice rhythm going. I'm anxious to see what the "smoother scrolling" really means. Keep those updates coming Amazon! So far, they've been pretty responsive to the complaints. Even though this may not have been as many changes as we'd hope, I guess I hope they just keep them coming and make the fixes solid. I do like your wishlist though weatherman. Hope to see all those things in the future! |

I just read on the Amazon discussion board that you can select the download link (https://s3.amazonaws.com/kindle-fire...1E_3103920.bin) from within the Silk Browser on your Fire and it will download to the appropriate folder and allow you install / update the Fire. No sideloading required.

You can remove items from the Carousel only until they are opened or run again at which time they will return to the Carousel. WTFire Amazon!!!! Give us a fricking switch to kill that POS Carousel!!

I am still waiting for the download. I may have to do it manually just because I am not very patient. Like others one of my biggest desires to to have the ability to set up collections dividing my books into groups. I love all the additional tablet features on my KF but it is still first and foremost a book reader for me.

Funny, I just downloaded it and moved it to the kindleupdates folder, but my update button is still grayed-out.
