Raac, if you don't know what eyestrain is, then you've never had it! It's basically when your eyes get tired from focusing on text (or anything close). It can happen when you're reading, using a computer, doing embroidery, etc. Many people think that LCDs (backlit text) cause more eyestrain than e-ink (non-backlit text). I guess not everyone is susceptible, but for myself, e-ink is definitely "easier on the eyes."
(side note: when I was in my early 20s, I worked in the copyediting department of a publisher. Everyone in my department wore glasses. They said to me, you will need glasses within 6 months. Sure enough, in six months I found I was closing one eye when to read when I was tired, and I needed reading glasses, which I have worn for reading and computer work ever since.) eP |

Elemeno, you should now retire to a (well-lit, naturally) room with paper/pen/dictaphone etc...... and wait for the calls from the industrial injury/syndrome lawyers to call................. They'll be all over you like a ferret up a drainpipe, you just wait ! ![]() I reckon you've pulled off a very shrewd move.... ![]() |

eInk....for reading in the DARK? Are you folks serious?
Want to know how eInk is in the dark? Read a regular book. It's the same thing. WHICH .... is why I don't have an eInk reader for reading in the dark. I far prefer my iPad or iPhone....with night mode, and larger font. My wife appreciates the difference as there is far less light in the room keeping her from sleeping. Lee |

Get fonts larger, set luminosity properly, switch on a light.
If you haven't been to the ophthalmologist for a while and are felling regular eyestrain, it might be a good idea to get an appointment. Last edited by EowynCarter; 12-21-2011 at 02:29 PM. |

Don't forget to disable the automatic brightness control on your Samsung tablet - you may find it is blocking your manual adjustment of the brightness level without you being aware of it.

I think the perfect companion to any eInk reader is a case and a book light that can clip onto it. Less ambient light than an overhead or tabletop lamp (better for sleeping partners) but still is easier on the eyes. |

I find my tablet far easier on the eyes than any book in the dark.

I have read on eInk and LCD devices for years. For nighttime reading, I use an iPhone or iPad. I use a custom setting for the background:
brown background cream text 25% backlight I can read for 3+ hours this way, with no eye-watering, bloodshot, etc. I may be able to read longer without the eyestrain, but 3 hours of reading puts me at about 2am, which means I'm a tired zombie the next day. |

![]() But now you put it that way.... Yes, if I read longer than my hour or two, I will get watering and bloodshot eyes. And, technically, that is caused by reading. As I always read on my LCD screen at light, it's caused by reading on a LCD screen. But not so much because of the screen, but because of lack of sleep ![]() |
