I just use Calibre to convert into Mobi. The Sony was good though.

Sony still is good now that they've fixed the touch screen problems.

The Gecko does not. I know it's not brightly colored. But most aren't and it's not easy to find a light cover that is good and brightly colored.

Ahhh..that just might be the deciding factor

Don't think she needs a light...she has an M-Edge cover right now. It looks like A-Case makes one in red that looks similar (and cheap)

On the other hand...this one comes in her favorite blue

Just remembered that I need to get her an AC Adapter...

everyone for the input!

I like the blue one better. It has no straps. I just don't like straps and if they can be avoided, all the better. Plus it is a nice color.

The original one eventually just died after about 18 months...wouldn't reset or anything. I sent her a second battery. About six months ago she said that she was having to recharge it every other day, so I sent her another.

I've only had my K1 a little longer and had to replace the battery after 2 years as it was barely holding a charge.

K3.

You already know she liked the K1, and the K3 is like that but better.

The K4 non-touch has a totally non-replaceable battery. Not even factory-replaceable. We already know that your Mom keeps this kind of device long enough for that to be an issue.

The K4, touch or non-touch, is too new to know if it has a high frequency of repair. We know that the K3 is good.

Also, units from the tail end of one of these production runs are likely to be more reliable than those from the start. That means K3.

I just bought the K4 Well, given these things are a third of the price I bought her first one for, guess I can afford to replace it each year

I don't think you can go wrong with the K4. Speaking from the POV of someone who suffers from wrist pain, you made the right choice!

I'm sure your mom will love it. Now don't forget to add some gift cards to your mom's Amazon account to go along with that spiffy new reader!!

To criticize my own post, the K4 is guaranteed for a year, so it doesn't matter if the battery dies during that time. And in 2013, the cost for a new black and white eInk reader may be so low it won't be worth it to replace batteries on an old one.

I didn't like the idea of a product reportedly glued together in a way making it impossible to service. However, that has nothing to do with your Mom's enjoyment.

Just for clarification, most people who post here seem to share the opinion that the statement JSWolf made is pure BS. He is a known Amazon-hater, in addition.

Thanks for the heads up...I am familiar with his posts but he didn't try to talk me out of a Kindle. He just gave his reasons for not picking the K3 (versus the K4). Maybe someone stole his login

Posting aside, he's gone out of his way to help me many times off to the side (as I am sure he has with others).

Good to know. I just didn't want you to think the K3 was obsolete.
