It's the story of a young man who is invalided out from the trenches of the First World War, and takes up a job as a schoolteacher in a small English boarding school. The book tells the story of his life as a schoolteacher right up to the outbreak of the Second World War. A truly great book, and one of the few that I can read and re-read, getting something new from it each time.
a very uplifting novel, thanks for the recommendation.

Oh, my, I hadn't read anything of his in YEARS, I'd completely forgotten about him.

I first read this book shortly after the Masterpiece Theater presentation, which was excellent. I read the book and loved it even more, and then a couple others (I no longer remember which ones). Amazing story, very well written, a delight.

And Harry, it's YOUR FAULT that I've just bought it.

Mr. Delderfield specialised in the "sweeping saga" style of storytelling and, IMHO, very few writers have ever done it better, from the magnificent "To Serve Them All my Days" to the trilogy of "A Horseman Riding By".

Karma and thanks, Harry, for reminding me about R. F. Delderfield. I'm about 1/2 way through "To Serve Them All My Days" and thoroughly enjoying it. You may have messed up my TBR and bumped up my bought books, but in this case I regret it not at all. A wonderful book.

Bumping this back up to the top.

R.F. Delderfield's God is an Englishman is a daily deal today for $1.99. Since I enjoyed To Serve Them All My Days, I'll be picking this one up too.

God is an Englishman isn't even available in the German Kindle store. I vaguely remember reading the trilogy back in the 70s (yes, I am this old), but can't remember a thing about them except that they were good. They are still on my shelf in hardcover, I could never bring myself to give them away. After all this talk about R. F. Delderfield on this board, it might be time for a reread.
