I have almost 40,000 on my 16gig MicroSD card, and the Nook seems to do very well with them. It only takes a few minutes to index, (Unlike taking days and days with the Sony) and seems to load them just fine through Calibre.

I don't use bookshelves, though, to just do a search on the file name I want. I do wish there were a way for it to show my collections like the Sony does.

Once in a while it does seem to 'forget' about the MicroSD card if it's been asleep for a couple of days. In that case I reboot and it finds it again and takes about five minutes to index. It also takes about that amount of time for Calibre to read the index of files on the device.

This IS theoretical, and not addressing your main concern (which seems to have been addressed), but you may be able to load B&N books in excess of the 750MB on board if you have them on a card from your Nook Classic or from Nook software on a PC or mobile device. While the new Nook will not download B&N content outside of the hidden partition, I don't see why it wouldn't read B&N content on a SD card.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing that as a fallback. Just treat 'em like everything else I *ahem* have in Calibre.
