I accidentally happened upon The Buckminster Boy by Gary D Schmidt when my son was 11. I find there's very little stuff good for that age that isn't fantasy, but we read a few Schmidt books and they were really good.

Also check out Flush by Carl Hiaasen or The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

James Patterson has a series aimed at teens/young adults called Maximum Ride.

Maybe try Inkheart by Cornelia Funke? Or The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents? A seasonal book (though slightly late) would be The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder.
