Hello You can always try the Microtek XT series, check http://ww7.microtek.com.tw/products.php?KindID=4. I cannot vouch for them, do - never saw one! Best regards, |

That said, it's very nice having flat scans without needing to crush the book (as long as you have more than about 1cm of margin on the inside). | |

The Microtek xt3300 seems nice though I'd have to buy it from Germany. I also found the Avision - FB2080E Scanner http://tinyurl.com/d6z84vx that's in the same price range, anyone tried it?

I have an Opticbook 3600, and my experience is similar to rkomar's. I have FineReader 11, which will export to epub, but I've found that FR11 still has problems sometimes with short lines with quotation marks, and problems with not recognizing paragraph continuation between pages, so you'll still need to postprocess it. If you've got a couple of the right cameras, and you're willing to do some building yourself, there's www.diybookscanner.org, which has several designs or examples of camera based scanners. I think you could probably do about 10 PPM with one of the 2 camera setups. |

There are enough good reasons to want to digitize a print collection that I'd encourage anyone who wants to find a way to do it that works for them.

I use a Canon DR-2050C with Acrobat X Pro in ClearScan mode. Works fast at 300 dpi and very accurate.

No, it's in the original language, I doubt very much it was ever translated. It was written in 1955 and the author talks about virtual reality and portable communication devices which could connect you in an instant with the whole world. This book technology wise did not age that much and surprisingly some things he foresaw appeared only recently. It never ceases to amaze me - how he could envision all this (back then, behind iron curtain with no access to the news on latest technology, no computers, no data base, how????) - sure some things look different now or took another turn but if you read this book you do not have discomfort of reading something past sell-by date. Compared to other books it centers more on human interactions and relations in enclosed space during an extremely long interstellar flight - and we talk of generations. Of leaving family behind to never see them again. Of memories fading with time. Of coping with loneliness and is the discovery worth the price. An all well wrapped in a very vivid description of the spaceship Gea, it's enteriors etc. I'm so glad I have it.
