It appears that the date is actually copyright 1987. What I am referring to is the edition of three books collected into on edition, along with a new introduction, box, illustrations, ribbon, etc, for this special edition. Hence, the new copyright.

I do remember that my copy is published my Houghton Mifflin.

Here's a description of the book, one which I just located:

Book Description: Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1987. Hard Cover in a Slipcase. Book Condition: Very Good. First Thus. 8vo. 423, 352, 440 pp. All three titles in a single volume but paginated individually, the titles and the page numbers in red. Red leatherette boards stamped with a jewel-pattern in gilt and blue on the front, spine, and back. Fold-out map in the back; marbled endpapers. Plain red leatherette slipcase. Price: US$ 395.00

Don
That looks like the edition I bought in the 70s for $40.

The 50th anniversary edition also displays this:

With a text fully corrected under the supervision of Christopher Tolkien to meet the authorÂ’s exacting wishes, two large-format fold-out maps, a ribbon placemarker, gilded page edges, a color insert depicting Tolkien's own paintings of the Book of Mazarbul and exceptionally elegant and sturdy overall packaging housed within an attractive slipcase, this edition is the finest weÂ’ve ever produced.

Indeed - the 50th anniversary edition is significantly improved over the original. The eBook is the 50th anniversary edition text.

OK, mine didn't have the gilt edges or the color inserts or CTs supervision of the text. (Most editions have errors and when they would make a new edition to correct them, other errors would creep in.)

Too bad we cannot zoom on maps, they are not really readable
But if I want to check maps I guess I can download some on the web, or check the ones in my 50th anniversary edition ^^

About "The Hobbit", I have bought this one:
http://www.kobobooks.fr/ebook/The-Ho...H1A/page1.html

Too bad the french versions are really weird, and were never translated again... I would like to read them to my children so I have to take a french version as well, but... with this weird translation...

Well, now that's what's puzzling to me. I could swear that my version is the 1978 version, and not the one showing a 1987 copyright.

The next time I go the U.S., I'll try to unpack that sucker and check it out.

Thanks.

The 50th anniversary edition now has electronic source text so, hopefully, once corrected should stay corrected.

You don't have to have a Kobo to buy from Kobobooks. I bought Lord of the Rings 50th from the Sony Store for $18.99 in March 2011. I just looked now & it's $21.99.

Can you confirm that the typos have been fixed?

Thanks.

It's been a while since I read LotR, but I remember that there is a chapter dealing with how Prof. Tolkien was careful about checking and cross-checking for errors and typos. That chapter in the ebook I bought 2-3 years ago had many gross typos.

There's a really long thread over in General Discussions which people set up for tracking and self-correcting the typos in various e-book versions of LOTR.
