There are not that many ecosystems to choose from.

There's iBooks and Apple. Not good for anyone living on Earth.

There is B&N with it's own DRM for ePub. Not too bad if you can strip the DRM and live in the US. Otherwise, no good.

There is Amazon and it's own DRM for Mobipocket. KF8 is coming, but we don't know if Amazon will allow it on the K3/KK. Until it can be stripped/converted to ePub, it's a locked system.

And finally there is ePub with Adobe Adept DRM.

That's it. There are no more.

Take a look at the Sony...I know they've been having some firmware issues but it might be a bit more flexible for someone who doesn't want to be tied down to B&N or Amazon.

i`ve just ordered the Kindle Touch with the (expensive) lighted leather cover.

i will do alot of bedtime reading and this was the decisive factor for me. the built in led light and cover looks fantastic..

also signed up for a trial period with amazon Prime.. got free two day shipping to my us address with that.. but dont know if i`ll be using it prior to that.

now i am excited to get my KT..

thanks everyone.

If you buy a nook STR, you are not locked into B&N. You can use ePub with Adept DRM. You can borrow Overdrive ePub from libraries. You can buy ePub from Sony.

Do you know that Amazon's light cover gets power from the Kindle. So as you read, you might end up with a dead battery a lot sooner then you would otherwise.

yes, i know. but with the built in battery to last so long that it does without the light i am not concerned. i find this a much better solution than external lights when i have to worry about yet another power source and another thing to carry along. so if i have to charge the kindle every 2 weeks it is not a hassle at all.. besides, how much can a led light consume of power??.. i wish that other ebook readers can come up with this solution in future models.

the winning factor here was in fact the built in led cover since i will be doing alot of bedtime reading. i really wanted a android based device like the nook. but with the warranties and sony`s freezing problems i fell on the KT.

The light actually uses a lot less power than you'd think. It appears to impact the battery life less than the wireless, certainly. And it is a definite plus to have it built in.

I's better if you keep the US address as default. Sometimes, some books are not available to non US Costumer. I live abroad too, and there is not problem at all with that, as long as you have your country setting set to US.

edit: i found the setting under "my kindle account>country settings" it was in Norway by default. changed it to the US address.. is this enough to get a US kindle account?

and will amazon send something to this address unintended?

In the same way you found the country setting. It has to be "US" now.
