I've had to shell out for a new laptop after my trusted 6yr old had a major crash and refused to switch on the other night. Changing back to an old hard drive brought him to life, but he really is struggling. For example, he can't keep up with the keyboard; words appear which were typed a nano-second ago. So it's on with the 505 plugged in for some time to come; a paperback goes to the doctor's waiting room with me. Perhaps, when my finances have recovered, they'll be more choice of ereaders.

I just wish the market wasn't giving up on 7" readers. My PRS-950 gives me more joy than even my PRS-505 did. It's such a beautiful device, and the screen size is really wonderful. After reading on it, whenever I go back to my 505 I feel like the screen is too small!

I acquired my 950 when it became obvious to me that (1) the Kindle Fire was a dud as an EBR and (2) the existence of a relatively low priced 7 inch LCD meant that there was not going to be enough demand for a 7 inch e-ink screen to tempt the manufacturers. However. I recently picked up a Sony T1 and am immensely pleased with it. I don't know what it is - the relative size of the screen compared to the casing, or the size of the fonts, but the 6 inch screen seems larger to me than 6 inch screens on other devices. The upshot is that the 950 has become my bedside EBR, and the T1 my actual carry-around EBR. My tired old eyes appreciate the extra real estate on the screen at night, because I can use larger fonts and still feel like I'm reading a whole page of a book. |

My beloved 505 bit the dust the other day. It had already started having battery problems and I was wondering whether I should get it fixed or not when I dropped it walking into the gym. It landed on the upper left corner and, although there is no visible damage, it will no longer switch on.
So, I hot-footed it over to the Sony Store and got a T1 which I am very happy with. |

The power switch is easily fixed. See this thread. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49562 The same thing happened to mine awhile back and it only took about 5-10 minutes to fix once I had a tiny screwdriver. But I say, enjoy your T1 and give your 505 to a new home. |

I love my 505. At this point, I wouldn't consider anything else until my 505 bites the dust. I will replace the battery if that goes, so I don't plan on replacing my 505 until something more serious goes wrong with it.

I love my 505 too - in fact, I'll be looking to get a backup one (or two) from ebay or similar. They're a fantastic device. I got my wife a Kobo, and although a better screen, the plastic feel of it put me off.
If anyone else decides to make a metal cased ebook reader like the 505, I'd be interested, otherwise, I'll be snapping them up for spares. |
