FYI, the 20 percent off code seems to work on any non-Agency book, not just the ones on the list.

Not to hijack the thread, but did anyone actually get a VOX reader that was pre-ordered?
Mine is still "delayed until Nov 7" (yes, weeks ago and not another word from Kobo). I've called and emailed and managed to get "escalated" but apparently my order is stuck in "pending" and no one there can look to see why or unstick it. |

I think the problem with Open Road and Kobo (at least in Canada) is the publisher has a much higher "standard price". Open Road are generally $9.99 in the US and $12.50ish in Canada. The 60% off is a much better price than we can normally get at Amazon ... except Amazon has its own sale.
I think it's worth pointing out this nonsense to Open Road. |

![]() For example, Macmillan's discount offerings are usually inflated by $1.00 for us at Kobo vs. Sony and Amazon's Canadian store branches. Whenever the Tor imprint does their monthly $2.99 introductory book sale, Kobo makes them $3.99 for Canadians, and of course you can no longer use the occasional $1 off coupon to even up the price discrepancy since Macmillan seems to have gone Agency in Canada. Similarly, the Tor.com short stories which sell for 99 cents elsewhere? All $1.99 in Canada. HarperCollins' $1.99 "with Bonus Material" introductory specials? $2.99 Canadian at Kobo if available at all. And during the height of the loonie, no less, when it was above par with the US dollar. But yeah, I'd complain to both Kobo Customer Service and Open Road in the hopes that they eventually do something about it. |

Try searching for CDs just from Japan. Can't be done (at least not last time I checked). Or DVDs from a single studio. One can search for books by publisher. Why not DVDs? Also, their non-option of not bring able to increase number of hits per page is a pain. Slogging thru page after page gets tiresome. |

Why not just get a pre-paid Android phone, like the cheaper Optimus V (3.2") or the Motorola Triumph (4.1", but still holding its value at over $200)? Or get a used smartphone with a bad ESN for cheap. Soon, most of us will have old smartphones we've retired, with old phone OSs, that will still be servicable media players, and will do VOIP calling like you want (I use sipdroid/pbxes.org on an Optimus V). Yeah, that seems what it is. But what's the value proposition compared to a pre-paid or bad ESN smartphone? |

That's too many hits to take and I won't do it. As to the used market; no. I don't buy used products. You're buying older technology approaching the end of its support cycle. Additionally, you're getting a battery that's been used daily for the last two years. That means adding the cost of a new battery to the price. Plus there's no warranty and you have no idea how much longer the device will work. On top of all of that, there's the issue of the seller's reputability. I have no desire to play that game. |

Thanks for that full answer, I hadn't noticed several of those features. Another benefit, I would think, is that you get more usable RAM in these devices. Cellphones use up some RAM for the phone, and for cellphone-provider crapware (hello, Verizon). I consider 512 MB RAM in an Android cellphone too low. In a media device it might be fine.

This is what I don't like about CDMA. With GSM, you can pretty much buy any phone you want (albeit, prices are pretty steep for higher end phones) and just pop in a SIM card and you're good to go. Got myself a Nexus S for $300. At the very least, given the hardware and being the former flagship Android phone, it'll probably be better supported than the Samsung Galaxy Player.
