I'm kind of surprised though at the number of people who actually thought that the Nook Tablet (or Kindle Fire) would be "real" (open)tablets and not understanding they are out there for BN (or Amazon) to sell content.

The KF is a real open tablet.

(I'm not planning on getting one anyway... or at least I don't think I am... but then I wasn't planning on getting hooked on eReading a year ago, and look how that turned out! )

Anyway, while the Nook Tablet fails to meet your openness needs at $250, it more than meets the average B&N consumer's needs, thus the need for two review conclusions.

Nope. I never said I wanted the experience found on a $500 tablet. I have used many tablets ranging from $100 to $600 and they were all open, to varying degrees. If the NT had fallen somewhere in that range i would accept it. Instead it fell far outside what I expected from a tablet.

And you're wrong on the KF. It's not walled in like the NT.

Rich, while you're right about the usefulness of 2 conclusions, I feel that with this particular device the one deciding detail on whether to buy it is the fact it's so closed. That's why i focused my review on just that one aspect.

And there are so many NT reviews on the WWW that I think a general review wouldn't be as useful as focusing my energy on just the one review.

That's understandable. B&N put out a fair amount of FUD about the KF. It confused the issue.

This one is too much hassle. Just not worth messing with this time around. Instead, I'm getting a so-called full Android tablet at a cheaper BF price.

I was rooted a few days ago. And I bought two NTs last night. I started testing them this morning. Wall garden is a perfect description. I am going to root one just as soon as the unrooting process is working for everyone that way I can return it if need be. I am keeping my figures crossed that the XDA folks will be able to hack the bootloader. If they do, then I will eventually have a wonderful Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. If not, then I have a pretty good Gingerbread Tablet.

Now... where did you get those tablets for those prices? It makes buying the NT moot if I can actually get a true tablet out of the box for a comparable price.

Best Buy's online Black Friday sale early this morning. They're now sold out.

I was ordering these devices just after 3am PST. The good stuff went fast. I missed a laptop I wanted.

The Best Buy tablets are sold out. The Transformer is an in store purchase only, and if you're not in line by now (or shortly thereafter), you can forget that one too.
